The City Council spent about half of its annual retreat talking about the Village Entrance project.
A
top council priority in 2012, the project was the major topic of
discussion again this year at the retreat, held Saturday at the South
County Water District offices on West Street.Other companies want a

"Over
18 years ago, a Village Entrance task force of community members,
including representatives from our Planning Commission, Arts Commission,
arts and business groups — as well as Village Laguna — created a
concept for the Village Entrance," said Mayor Pro Tem Elizabeth Pearson.
The concept included rehabbing the historical digester building
and putting it to use, creating a meandering pedestrian park, and
constructing a parking garage that isn't a visual blight while adding
parking spaces.
Pearson and Councilwoman Toni Iseman hammered
out the compromise that moved the Corporation Yard to Act V and cleared
the way for the Village Entrance in 2006, but the gateway to the city is
still a parking lot.
"We need to follow through … and create a beautiful entryway into our city that includes additional parking," Pearson said.
Pearson and Iseman have been conferring this past year on how to get the concept off the drawing board.
"The
Village Entrance is more than a park and a parking structure," Iseman
said Tuesday. "We have to integrate the information from all the studies
and reports to do things right.
"Parking, the Downtown Specific Plan, the Art District, shuttles and the transit system all have to be considered."
The
project won't be cheap, but it is doable, provided the council reverts
to using the city's parking fund for what it was intended — the creation
of parking spaces, such as the Glenneyre Street Parking structure,
according to Pearson.
Pearson has long been critical of the
practice of transferring parking funds to the general fund to balance
the city's budget, about $7 million in 10 years.
She said

Inside
it’s a different story because the BMW is our clear favourite when it
comes to interior quality and space. There is much more room available
in the cabin of the 3 Series and trim quality is higher, too. The
initially daunting but ultimately faster and more intuitive iDrive
control system also shows the Mercedes COMAND set-up how it should be
done. Its rotary controller and menu system has evolved into an
impressive and powerful way of navigating your way around the car’s
various functions. Climb into the Mercedes after a spell in the BMW and
the interior feels cramped and dated in comparison.
Picking the right trim and engine combination isn’t easy with so many choices on offer,Did you know that custom keychain
chains can be used for more than just business. but the 320d SE is the
BMW 3 Series to go for. Its diesel engine marries 181bhp performance to
fuel economy of 62.8mpg and tax efficient CO2 emissions of 120g/km.
Company car drivers should give the ED model a closer look as its extra
fuel-saving features barely compromise the driving experience and cut
emissions to 109g/km.
That puts the 3 Series on a par with the
Mercedes C-Class as the C220 CDI produces CO2 emissions of 109g/km when
fitted with its standard 16-inch alloy wheels. With such cost effective
output and a higher standard kit count in SE executive spec, the C-Class
is the car your accountant would tell you to buy. In SE trim the BMW
comes with alloys, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise and climate control,
rear parking sensors and a large colour central display. But the
Mercedes SE Executive includes all of this kit, plus LED daytime running
lights and artico artificial leather upholstery.Application can be
conducted with the local designated IC card producers.
If
you’re worried that buying a saloon limits practicality, split-folding
rear seats are optional extras on both models, so bear this in mind when
you’re pricing up your next company car. Only five litres separates
them when it comes to luggage space, but if you need to carry passengers
in the back, the BMW is the one to go for as it promises more comfort
for rear passengers. Both models represent safe and reliable options
and,We've got a plastic card
to suit you. while the newer BMW scored more highly in its Euro NCAP
test, the C-Class matches the 3 Series in the Safety Assist category
thanks to a raft of active safety features.
The BMW also leads
the way for driver appeal, with more precise steering combined with a
more alert and talented chassis. The Mercedes isn’t as nimble or fast,
and its engine isn’t as refined as the BMW’s on the move, but its
adaptive dampers do ensure a comfortable ride. Its big weakness is a
slack manual gearshift and numb clutch pedal, which makes the more
costly automatic model a better bet.

Protesters break into gov't building in Athens
Protesters forced their way into a government building in Greece's
latest anti-austerity protests Wednesday, reaching just outside a
minister's office before being expelled and clashing with riot police
outside.
Police detained more than 30 protesters, most union heads, sparking clashes with about 200 demonstrators gathered outside the Labor Ministry in central Athens. Police used pepper spray, batons and tear gas to repel them.
The government said the demonstrators caused damage inside the building and threatened the minister— an accusation the protesters adamantly denied.
Greece has been gripped by a severe financial crisis since late 2009 and is being kept afloat by billions of euros in rescue loans from other eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund. In return, the government has imposed waves of spending cuts and tax hikes,Comprehensive Wi-Fi and RFID tag by Aeroscout to accurately locate and track any asset or person. leading to severe salary and pension cuts and leaving unemployment spiraling to above 26 percent.
Union members were protesting planned reforms to the pension and income contribution system — part of the latest spending cuts in the bailout program.
Other measures that took effect this year include a new 25 percent cut to the incomes of most public servants, leading to a string of new strikes and protests.
At least one protestor in Wednesday's demonstration was taken to hospital in an ambulance, while at least another two were treated by fellow protesters on the spot after collapsing, apparently from the effects of pepper spray.
A ministry official said about 30 protesters made it into the Labor Ministry, breaking doors, overturning chairs and knocking files off tables. They reached the waiting room outside the minister's office, where the minister, Yiannis Vroutsis, was present but unaffected.
"Violence in all its forms must be condemned, not only in words but also by actions," government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou said. "The organized raid and attempt to occupy the Labor Ministry by force does not solve workers' problems," Vroutsis said. "Scuffles and the destruction of public property only cause sadness. I am sorry, because some people aiming to create impressions are setting up a scene of tension and violence."
Strikes are to intensify in coming days, with public transport workers and hospital doctors to hold a 24-hour strike in the capital on Thursday. RIT takes steps to contain costs
Rochester Institute of Technology President Bill
Destler announced Tuesday cost-savings and revenue-generating measures projected
to amount to about $3 million.
Such steps, said Destler, should keep the annual tuition increase at 3.5 percent or less.
Destler said that he was taking these measures, effective July 1, at a time when RIT’s “fiscal health is quite strong.” Applications for admissions are continuing to rise and the student population is growing while RIT is being more selective in the students accepted.
But Destler noted that there is also a limit — increasingly a matter of public concern — on how much families can afford to pay for a college education.
“I think the handwriting is on the wall,” Destler said. “We’ve got to get some control over expenditures — or else we might have to do it in a crisis situation.”
The proposals adopted would put a limit at 145 credits for no tuition or greatly reduced tuition for the children and spouses of RIT employees in undergraduate programs. That means that they could get those benefits for almost five years of schooling. The changes won’t apply to students already enrolled at RIT.
Another proposal adopted by Destler would impose fees for parking on campus. A student permit would be $100 per year. Employees earning less than $38,000 per year can still park for free, with a graduated fee system kicking in for those who make more that has a maximum fee of $150 per year.
Almost $1 million in annual fees are expected to be generated by the parking fee changes. Presently, students, faculty and staff can park for free, although there are fees for those wanting reserved spaces near classrooms.Laser engraving and laser laser cutting machine for materials like metal,
The proposals grew out of recommendations made over the past year by committees consisting of more than 100 RIT faculty and staff. Destler selected areas that he wanted to address and in November floated proposals for comment.
RIT student Alicia Matherson, 20,Comprehensive Wi-Fi and RFID tag by Aeroscout to accurately locate and track any asset or person. of Brooklyn welcomed the cost-containment measures. “The economy is not getting that much better. It’s hard to pay tuition as it is,” she said.
But Samuel Kennedy, 22, of Bristol, Conn., said that the annual tuition increase needs to be brought down more. “I don’t think I should be impressed by the 3.Can you spot the answer in the fridge magnet?5 percent. It’s a start but not exactly great news,” he said.
Destler said that about two-thirds of the $3 million would be used for reducing tuition increases, with the rest going for existing programs and new initiatives, including salary enhancements for faculty and staff where RIT is not competitive with other colleges.
RIT, which has an annual operating budget of $666.1 million, is taking these steps at a time that the cost of college is increasingly a factor for most families. President Barack Obama has also put colleges on notice that “if you can’t stop tuition from going up, the funding you get from taxpayers will go down.Wear a whimsical Disney ear cap straight from the Disney Theme Parks!”
Moody’s Investors Service recently released its annual tuition survey and found that a third of universities expect net tuition revenue either to decline or grow at a rate below inflation. A Moody’s analyst, in a statement announcing the survey results, said that the “cumulative effects of years of depressed family income and net worth, as well as uncertain job prospects for many recent graduates, are combining to soften student market demand at current tuition prices.”
Destler wants to reduce tuition increases close to the U.S. inflation rate, which is growing at 1.7 percent a year, according to the latest U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report.

Destler also adopted changes in purchasing policies such as requiring RIT to compete when outside vendors are being considered for catering pizza and subs on orders exceeding $400.

Council blacklists barber for warning people
A HAIRDRESSER has had a close shave with authorities after trying to
warn illegally parked motorists of approaching traffic wardens.
Andy Blackwell uses his loud-hailer and a wailing siren sound to warn people when a traffic warden is going to give them a ticket outside his shop.
"When I told them what had gone on they gave me plenty of advice and said be careful because the council take a dim view of this."
Three days later Mr Blackwell said he received a letter from Cornwall Council saying he had been placed on the council cautionary contacts list and his name would be passed to other agencies as well.
Mr Blackwell , who runs Blackie's in Liskeard, added: "I thought it was extreme especially the first part saying I'd verbally abused causing extreme distress to some of their employees."
Cornwall County Council said the cautionary contacts list was an internal system designed to protect council staff from potentially harmful situations including physical assault and verbal abuse.
They added many local authorities have similar schemes and the information is only used within the council and is only available to employees who may be exposed to such risks.
Mr Blackwell has now hung up his megaphone and has started a petition for free parking in the town.

Mexico City has long had a dark cloud hovering over it – both literally and figuratively – when it comes to traffic woes and vehicle emissions. As recently as 2011, residents of Mexico’s vibrant capital city reported “enduring the most painful commute,” according to a report in National Geographic. “Based on factors such as roadway traffic, stress levels, and commute times, the city scored worse than 19 cities, including Beijing, China, and Nairobi, Kenya.”
So it might come as a surprise that this megacity, home to 20 million people and more than 4 million vehicles, was recently selected to receive the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy’s Sustainable Transport Award.
National Geographic describes Mexico City’s progress, noting that over the past two years the city has taken great strides to become more pedestrian-friendly with car-free walkways and plazas, new bus lines, a bike-sharing program, and a system of parking meters.
Sure, traffic still exists and air quality isn’t perfect, but anyone who has been to the bustling metropolis knows the hurdles the city has had to confront and what great progress must have been made to entitle it to an award of this sort.

Kerry confirmed as secretary of state
The Senate overwhelmingly confirmed President Barack Obama's choice of five-term Sen.We offer over 600 landscape oil paintings
at wholesale prices of 75% off retail. John Kerry to be secretary of
state, with Republicans and Democrats praising him as the ideal
successor to Hillary Rodham Clinton.
The vote today was 94-3. One senator — Kerry — voted present and accepted congratulations from colleagues on the Senate floor. The roll call came just hours after the Senate Foreign Relations Committee unanimously approved the man who has led the panel for the past four years.
Kerry could be sworn in as early as Wednesday. A welcoming ceremony is planned at the State Department on Monday.
Obama tapped Kerry, 69, the son of a diplomat, decorated Vietnam veteran and 2004 Democratic presidential candidate, to succeed Clinton, who is stepping down after four years. The Massachusetts Democrat, who had pined for the job but was passed over in 2009, has served as Obama's unofficial envoy, smoothing fractious ties with Afghanistan and Pakistan.
"Sen. Kerry will need no introduction to the world's political and military leaders and will begin Day One fully conversant not only with the intricacies of U.S. foreign policy, but able to act on a multitude of international stages," said Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., who will succeed Kerry as committee chairman.
Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, the panel's top Republican, called Kerry "a realist" who will deal with unrest in Egypt, civil war in Syria, the threat of al-Qaida-linked groups in Africa and Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons.
Kerry, a forceful proponent of climate change legislation, also will have a say in whether the United States moves ahead on the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada, a divisive issue that has roiled environmentalists.
Voting against Kerry were three Republicans — Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma and John Cornyn and Ted Cruz of Texas. Absent from the vote were Sens. Patty Murray,We provide payment solutions in the USA as well as high risk merchant account. D-Wash., and John Hoeven, R-N.D.
"Sen. Kerry has a long history of liberal positions that are not consistent with a majority of Texans," Cornyn said in a statement. The senator is up for re-election next year and could face a tea party challenge.
Kerry's smooth path to the nation's top diplomatic job stands in stark contrast to the harsher treatment for Obama's other national security nominees — Chuck Hagel to be defense secretary and John Brennan to be CIA director.
Hagel, the former two-term Republican senator from Nebraska, faces strong opposition from some of his onetime GOP colleagues who question his support for reductions in the nuclear arsenal and cuts in defense spending. Lawmakers also have questioned whether he is sufficiently supportive of Israel and strongly opposed to any outreach to Iran.
Democrats have rallied for Hagel, and he has the announced support of at least a dozen members in advance of his confirmation hearing on Thursday. Six Republicans have said they would vote against him, with some opposing Obama's choice even before the president's announcement.
Brennan faces questions from the GOP about White House leaks of classified information and from Democrats about the administration's use of drones.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., threatened to block the nomination of both men until he gets more answers from the Obama administration about the assault on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Libya that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.
Graham, who earlier this month signaled he would delay Brennan's pick, said in an interview Monday night with Fox News' "On the Record" the he would "absolutely" block Hagel unless Defense Secretary Leon Panetta testifies about the attack in Benghazi, Libya.
Clinton testified for more than five hours last Wednesday before the House and Senate, but that wasn't sufficient for Graham.
"Hillary Clinton got away with murder, in my view," he said. "She said they had a clear-eyed view of the threats. How could you have a clear-eyed view of the threats in Benghazi when you didn't know about the ambassador's cable coming back from Libya?"
Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., told reporters today that a hearing with Panetta on Libya is planned though the date is uncertain. Graham welcomed that news and said he would not thwart a committee vote on the nomination.
"Happy as a clam. News to me," said Graham, who met with Hagel for 20 minutes today.
Pentagon spokesman George Little said Panetta had not responded yet to the request but that the department has been forthcoming with information. He insisted that the Hagel confirmation process move as quickly as possible.
Two former chairmen of the committee — Democrat Sam Nunn of Georgia and Republican John Warner of Virginia — plan to introduce Hagel, according to officials close to the confirmation process. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the committee has not formally made an announcement.
As a White House emissary, Kerry has tamped down diplomatic fires for Obama. He also has stepped ahead of the administration on a handful of crises. He joined Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.,protection and features only Safety goggles can provide. as an early proponent of a more aggressive policy toward Libya, pushing for using military forces to impose a "no-fly zone" over Libya as Moammar Gadhafi's forces killed rebels and other citizens. He was one of the early voices calling for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to step down as revolution roiled the nation two years ago.
During his tenure, Kerry has pushed for reducing the number of nuclear weapons, shepherding a U.S.-Russia treaty through the Senate in December 2010, and has cast climate change as a national security threat, joining forces with Republicans on legislation that faced too many obstacles to win congressional passage.
He has led delegations to Syria and met a few times with President Bashar Assad, now a pariah in U.S. eyes after months of civil war and bloodshed as the government looks to put down a people's rebellion. The term 'hands free access control' means the token that identifies a user is read from within a pocket or handbag. Figuring out an end-game for the Middle East country would demand all of Kerry's skills.
The selection of Kerry closes a political circle with Obama. In 2004, it was White House hopeful Kerry who asked a largely unknown Illinois state senator to deliver the keynote address at the Democratic convention in Boston,Like most of you, I'd seen the broken buy mosaic decorated pieces. handing the national stage to Obama. Kerry lost that election to President George W. Bush. Four years later, Obama was the White House hopeful who succeeded where Kerry had failed.

“The injuries can take a toll, not necessarily physically but mentally, where you get worn down by it,” Grant said. “He’s been through a lot over the course of his career, but the thing about him: Not one minute do you see a guy that’s hesitant, do you see a guy that’s wavering in terms of his desire to play, his passion for the game, his passion for his teammates, his understanding of his impact, whether it’s starting a game, playing 25 minutes, finishing a game, whatever he can do. …
“For me to not be able to physically help my teammates was really tough," he said earlier this month. “The whole time, I think I just tried to be encouraging and even try to lead the best that I could. “He obviously followed the career of his brother here. His passion for this university – everything about this university, not just or program – he’s a great ambassador for our program, and great ambassador for this city of Birmingham.”

You are being social and engaging your audience. Most importantly you are educating people on taking care of their homes and people love to be educated.
It is great to let people know who you are and what you have accomplished, here or there, but NOT all of the time. No one cares and you are irritating people.
When you try to get people to believe you are wonderful it is obvious and it turns people off. As I said in point #2, educate people. Give them something and educate them.

We should organise community clean-up campaigns
While it's still unclear what kind of "model" Al Jazeera America
wants to pursue, it should be pretty obvious at this point what to
avoid. Under the leadership of Al Gore, Current became a kind of
lackluster version of hyper partisan MSNBC, only with poorer production
values. Even liberal readers of the London Guardian conceded that
Current had failed to connect, with one remarking "I found it to be
painfully dull and weird. I felt at times like I was the only person
watching this station. It was a bit like watching a college TV news show
on public access television."
The odyssey of Current TV highlights some of the perils and pitfalls of cable news programming. Hoping to overcome mediocre ratings, Al Gore hired Keith Olbermann back in 2011. A pundit with "star power," Olbermann employed the same familiar packaging which had made him a household name on MSNBC. Stylistically, Olbermann combined a mix of jocularity, combativeness and ruthless sarcasm. Even with the new MSNBC pundit on board, however, Current continued to founder and its viewership remained puny.
During the Bush years, Olbermann's shoot from the hip style provided a much needed alternative voice to Fox News. However, the veteran pundit became slightly gimmicky over time and made little effort to innovate during his tenure at Current [a Jon Stewart impersonation on the The Daily Show successfully skewered Olbermann's hackneyed approach]. Far from undertaking a much needed overhaul at Current, Al Gore hired Democratic hacks Jennifer Granholm and Eliot Spitzer. In their new incarnation as media hosts, both sought to stylistically emulate MSNBC pundits. Ultimately, however, Gore's shakeup strategy proved futile and Current failed to gain any traction.
Though Olbermann later fell out with Current and left the network, the pundit's packaging style lives on at MSNBC. To a greater or lesser degree, many commentators on the network pursue Olbermann's penchant for sarcasm and combativeness. Take, for example, Rachel Maddow, an engaging host who also employs smugness toward the GOP and a kind of "wink,Custom laser marker systems for a wide variety of applications built by Control Micro Systems. wink" attitude towards her viewers, as if to say "aren't we superior to the right?" Unlike Fox, Maddow employs rigorous fact-checking and is much sharper than her conservative media counterparts. However, Maddow can also go too far at times with her entertaining style careening out of control into sheer wackiness.
Maddow, however, is more independent politically than other MSNBC hosts who can seem relentlessly partisan. Take, for example, Reverend Al Sharpton, who serves up a nightly dose of GOP abuses and misdeeds. Other commentators, too, seem more intent on throwing red meat to their liberal audience than actually raising the intellectual bar. Take for instance Lawrence O'Donnell, a commentator espousing radical politics who nevertheless seems to stick to the fairly tame and liberal MSNBC script.original handmade custom bobbleheads Head dolls made to look like the photo you provide to us. Like Olbermann, O'Donnell has developed a political fixation on Rush Limbaugh and runs countless segments refuting the right wing talk show host.
Yet another grave shortcoming of cable news programming in the U.S. is the networks' tendency to focus on domestic news to the detriment of international coverage. Indeed,Info Store about make your own bobblehead and Bobbleheads in general. it might be said that MSNBC is just as insular and parochial as Fox, with the liberal network rarely alerting its viewers to issues of vital international concern. MSNBC's failure in this regard is somewhat surprising in light of the network's ties to The Nation magazine, an outlet which historically did much to elevate the tenor of political and intellectual debate in the U.S.
In recent years, however, The Nation seems to have made a calculated decision to emphasize narrow-minded inside baseball in Washington as evidenced by the front page of the magazine's web site [when The Nation publishes a rare piece on Latin America, for that matter, it is cause for celebration]. In an effort to gain more visibility, the magazine has exported several of its columnists to MSNBC. Once ensconced at the network, The Nation crowd promptly conforms to the MSNBC template and tends to emphasize domestic issues while passing over international news.
With fewer and fewer cable options, the American public has been forced to turn elsewhere for international fare. To be sure, the U.S. viewing audience may tune into the decidedly middling CNN International. On the parent network, however, CNN has largely eschewed international coverage, let alone any kind of serious investigative journalism, in favor of inane political banter. Perhaps sensing the true mediocrity of its own programming, CNN seeks to distract the viewer with silly graphics and even holograms. Lacking a sense of direction, CNN has turned to new CEO Jeff Zucker in the hope of shifting the network's fortunes. A former NBC Executive, Zucker wants to transform CNN into a glorified entertainment vehicle modeled after the Today Show.
Surveying the lamentable state of cable news, it's easy to see what's wrong with the media milieu though it's far from clear what kind of new model al-Jazeera might want to pursue. Part of the problem lies in assessing the overall mood of the U.S. public and setting a bar for the viewing audience. On the left,British designers and Manufacturers of laser cutting and laser engraving machine. some have argued that if the American public simply had more facts and international journalistic excellence at its disposal then society would be galvanized and the media would finally succeed at prompting meaningful political change.
Such arguments, however, can seem overly idealistic or even obtuse in light of the lackluster capabilities of many Americans. Indeed, if Al Jazeera America wants to compete it may have to wrestle with issues of style as well as content. Stan Collender, a spokesman for al-Jazeera America, recently remarked to the Washington Post that the new channel would not be an opinion network or deal with celebrity news. "It's not going to be people screaming at each other,Site describes services including Plastic Mould." Collender said. Such declarations are music to the ears of cable consultant Cathy Rasenberg, who told the New York Times "there's a major hole right now that Al Jazeera can fill. And that is providing an alternative viewpoint to domestic news, which is very parochial."
Rasenberg, who has also worked with Al Jazeera on distribution issues in the past, also added however that "there is a limited amount of interest in international news in the United States." Al Jazeera itself admits that the new network is going to be something of a work in progress. Speaking to NPR recently, Al Jazeera Executive Producer Bob Wheelock remarked "our challenge is going to be to come up with new programming that is more tailored to a domestic U.S. audience."
