He is one of numerous participants permitted to exhibit during winter when Sawdust administrators waive local residency requirements.

Akoko Okeyo, of Newport Beach, will show etched glass panels depicting animals at home in her native Kenya. “I have also tried my hand at marine animals but they are a bit harder to do. I have to still look at pictures to draw them but the African animals are embedded in my memory,” she said.

Okeyo belongs to a London-based glass etchers guild that admits only a hand-full of members world-wide (two including her are from the U.S.) who must pass a yearly examination to stay in.

Margo Burgess’ JuJu dolls have their roots in West Africa. Sales of human placenta continue to flourish online, despite a government ban on the trade and warnings from health experts about the risk of disease.

Taobao, the country's largest online marketplace, is awash with vendors offering dried or ground placenta, a popular ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine .

Several traders contacted by China Daily said their products were secretly purchased from staff members at hospitals and specialized maternity clinics, without the knowledge of new mothers.

"It's OK for a hospital to take my placenta for study and research, but never for stewing it with herbs or wrapping into dumplings, never."

She also said she would not eat placenta.

Panelists warn cash grant for solar panels set to expire

A panel of experts and a state assemblyman explained that since cash grants for solar projects are set to expire at the end of the year, now is the ideal time for property owners, developers and non-profits to get involved.

Approximately 70 people attended the seminar, "Crunch Time for Solar" on Sept. 22 at the Stony Hill Inn. Even though it was raining during the seminar, panelist Adam Putter, president of Solar Roof Development, said in his opening remarks, "solar is still working on a day like today."

According to Putter, New Jersey is the second largest solar market in the country, with California as the largest. However, New Jersey is the biggest commercial market for solar panels in the nation.

New Jersey first got involved with solar panel installations in 2001 when six were completed. More than 10,000 installations have been completed to date.

She stated that she had parked in front of a store on Kinderkamack Road at about 10 a.m. She had left her purse on the front passenger side floor of the vehicle, covered with a plastic bag. When she returned to the car at noon, the purse was gone. The woman reported that multiple credit cards, a Social Security card, driver's license, checkbook and about $150 were missing. The vehicle had been unlocked at the time of the theft.

On June 29 at 3:45 a.m., a resident of Beech Drive South reported that the rear window of her vehicle was shattered and a barrel of recycled bottles had been knocked over and scattered on the street in front of the vehicle. The victim stated she had returned home at about 1:45 a.m. and at 3:45 a.m. had left the house to go to a store when she discovered the damage to her car and the bottles in the roadway. A subsequent search by patrol found another recycling barrel had been dumped on the corner of Manning and Elm avenues.

On June 29 at 6:40 a.m., a resident of Oak Avenue reported that her vehicle had been struck by eggs sometime overnight while parked in front of her home. It had been parked in the location since approximately 9 p.m. on June 28.

We have a 6:00am call time this morning. We are driven into downtown LA, somewhere near the Staples Center. We know today will be the first team challenge with yesterday's winners, Derrick and Max, picking the teams.

We walk into the cafeteria of the LA Times building to meet the judges. Sure enough Derrick and Max are captains. I'm picked in the middle of the pack by Derrick, captain of the red team. Our team consists of Derrick, Adrien, Christine, Suzy, Erryn, Jennie, Ben Starr,The Leading zentai suits Distributor to Independent Pet Retailers. and myself… I feel good about the team. I know it's not my turn to be the leading voice so I'm fine being the workhorse. I'm also fine stepping up as a leader if (and only if) needed.

Both teams are given a quick tour of the service area and prep kitchen. There's a lot of equipment in there that I've never used…and I've used some unusual equipment! The judges tell us we'll have just two and a half hours to prep a cafeteria style lunch for 350 dinners. Service will last two hours- Wait, how many hundred diners? I've never cooked for more than 20 people… and I had almost a whole day of prep in that! And we're not just making an entree, side, dessert…both teams will be making a signature salad, soup du jour, brick oven pizza, daily special entree with side, and dessert! Time to do work!

I quickly take a prep role with the soup. I start to break down what seems like an endless mountain of celery and carrots. I have no idea what 350 portions of soup looks like. I don't even know if I've eaten 350 portions of soup in my life… … … okay, maybe I have, but I've certainly never MADE 350 portions of soup. I just keep cutting veggies.The name "magic cube" is not unique. After a vegetable eternity, Erryn brings me two trays of chicken to dice. I've gotten a blister on my right hand from the knife at this point…this is ridiculous!

Half way through service we are getting our asses kicked. I actually was more of a secondary floater during service. I'd get a few pizzas assembled for Ben, then run around doing other things, checking on people, and return to Ben to make more pizzas. Whoever is responsible for the pizza win, it feels good to beat Giuseppe. He's trying to make, fire, and serve the pizzas all by himself…He's good, but not that good.

Because of our win yesterday, the red team is exempt from elimination and after a short greeting, the judges send us up to the balcony to watch the day's pressure test.

The view is great from the balcony! Yesterday's blue team is now wearing black aprons, signifying that one of them will be leaving the competition. Today's challenge will be making ravioli. Nice! But then Chef Ramsay goes on to say that they are taking the creative license away.

Everyone in the pressure test will make a simple spinach and ricotta ravioli with a simple butter sauce. No hiding behind fancy sauces or fillings, this pressure test will be all about technique… an interesting twist!

The hour moves slowly when you're not cooking. I hope to myself that I get more opportunities to get used to the view from the balcony.

On to judging…the usual highs and lows. At the end of it all, Tony is sent home. Then one of the few genuine feel good moments of the show. Graham explains what a pleasure it has been to watch Tony's food progress — from the open call auditions in Chicago all the way up till now. He then goes on to offer Tony a stage at one of his restaurants. WOW! What an opportunity for Tony. He's one of the most passionate guys here, he hopes to open a small chalk board restaurant in the future. I hope that learning from Graham and the publicity of the show will place him in a kitchen soon.

No, it's not fall, but it is almost summer and time for a change from winter reds to summer white wines. As the weather gets hotter, we like our food lighter and our wine colder. Cold also accentuates the unpleasant nature of tannins; plentiful in red wines, but not in white.

It is permissible to drink some red wines colder than you normally might. Lighter red wines like Beaujolais (Gamay) and some lighter Pinot Noir's will stand up to the cold, as well as very fruity or very sweet red wines like an Italian Lambrusco or Brachetto d'acqui. The cold will suppress the sweetness and accentuate the fruitiness of these wines, but you will also sacrifice some of the flavor characteristics. It's not a bad trade-off on a really hot day.

Summer also means grilling; fish, chicken and pork prepared simply, without those savory, but heavy sauces we like during the colder months. Packard Bell and Amiga Enter Android Tablet Fray

Two prominent names from the 90's PC era have entered the Android tablet game,

hoping  to grab a piece of the pie.  Amiga is rolling out a pair of Android 2.2

tablets in 7-inch and 10-inch variants, both of which can be purchased immediately.

According to the email we received, the 7-inch Xpedio 7 MT model will be nearly

identical to the Galaxy Tab with a 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM, and 16GB storage. At

$299 it will be a tough sell against the likes of Samsung, especially with its 800 x

480 resolution screen and 1.3-megapixel camera. The 10-inch version (Xpedio 10 MT)

looks to fetch $449 and should have the same internals save for its larger screen.

The picture you see above is said to be a stack of their tablets rolling off the

assembly line. Amiga promises that these tablets will see Honeycomb once Google

releases the code to all.

Currently, Amiga is donating at least $25 of each purchased tablet to relief efforts

in Japan and Haiti. Down the road, addition initiatives and schools will benefit

from the Amiga cause. All one has to do is enter Japan or Haiti in the promotional

code section when checking out with their purchase.
