It is time to roll up your sleeve and get that annual flu shot.
Palomar Pomerado Health has announced its community clinics for those 18 and older will begin next week and continue through December.
The flu shots are 20 or free if Medicare is to be billed. Pay by cash or check or bring Medicare card and photo identification.
Many other locations are giving the influenza vaccination. These include grocery and drug stores and, of course, a doctor's office.
One place where seniors will not be able to obtain a free flu shot is Rancho Bernardo Senior Services. Manager Beth Wilson said she was recently notified by California Department of Public Health that due to the state budget, for the first time RBSS is not going to receive its annual allotment of 1,200 to 1,500 flu vaccinations.
"I'm very upset about it because we've done it for so many years," Wilson said.
The shots given over three days were completely free since even Medicare was not billed, she said.
"They figure this area has Medicare so give (the shots) to clinics (serving) people who are not insured," she said.
Last month, San Diego County health officials said the state budget crisis means fewer low-income adults in the county will be able to receive a free flu shot. According to Arangio-Law, this year's vaccine includes three flu strains, including an H1N1-like strain that world health experts anticipate will be the most common going around this year. She said they base that on research conducted in Atlanta, London, Melbourne, Tokyo and Beijing.

"It takes two weeks for the body to make antibodies (to the flu virus)," Arangio-Law said, adding people cannot get the flu by getting immunized. Protection lasts six months to one year.
In addition to getting the vaccine, she said ways to avoid the flu are washing hands thoroughly and not touching one's eyes, nose or mouth since these are germ entry points.
