Community gathers to support champion coach

Hundreds of friends, fans, and well-wishers gathered at Dietrich high school on Wednesday to pay tribute to their state champion girl's basketball head coach.

As dinner was served, friends reminisced about winning the state championship back in February. It was the beginning of an emotional roller coaster for the community. In a triple overtime marathon against rival Richfield, head coach Acey Shaw and his girls brought back the championship.

"Acey's a great guy, he comes from a great family," Dietrich resident Shanna Perkins said.

"He's someone that really loves life, and loves sports," Dietrich resident Neal Hollingshead said.

Euphoric from the championship win, Coach Shaw and his players returned to Dietrich that night, and got back to their everyday lives. For coach Shaw, that entailed getting back to work on his ranch the very next morning.

"He went out to check the calves, and it was a cold morning," Shaw's wife Jalyn recalls. "And he saw this little calf and it was cold. And he just kind of scooped it up and put it in his truck to warm it up.Do not use cleaners with porcelain tiles , steel wool or thinners."

To save the calf's life, Shaw drove around with the newborn in the cab of his truck, the heat on high, circulating the air throughout the enclosed space. It was a normal task for a rancher, and Shaw thought nothing of it. Until he woke up a few days later with a sore back.there's a lovely winter chicken coop by William Zorach. One week later, Shaw was unable to walk. That is when he was forced to check into the University of Utah hospital in Salt Lake City.

Shaw underwent dozens of procedures and therapies. At one point, doctors were forced to put him on life support. He also lost feeling in his arms and legs, and even went blind for a while.

Finally after five long months, the treatments started to have an affect, and Shaw's doctors released him from the hospital.

"I'm still here. I'm still battling," Shaw said.

That battle has been tough, and is long from over. Shaw still can't walk, he can't use his left arm and leg, and speech is a challenge. He depends on his wife and family for just about everything.

"The good thing about it is that he still has his mind. His personality is the same," Jalyn said.

But they aren't facing it alone.

"He would do anything for anyone," according to friend Mindy Robertson. "So we want to do everything we can to help him."

When Shaw's story made it to the College of Southern Idaho campus in Twin Falls, the athletic department wanted to help as well. The solution was an exhibition basketball game held at Dietrich high school, with the junior college national champion Golden Eagles hosting the College of Idaho. All proceeds went to the Shaw family.

"Coach, I want to wish you the best of luck, from our family to yours, on the repeat, but more importantly on the recovery coach," CSI men's basketball head coach Steve Gosar said when he addressed the crowd at halftime.

Bedrosians to remodel ex-lumber yard into showplace

Bedrosians Tile & Stone plans to refurbish a former lumber yard in southwest Santa Rosa into a high-end design center and showroom that will be a model for the company’s locations nationwide.

Fresno-based Bedrosians acquired the shuttered 84 Lumber Co. property at 705 Stony Point Rd. on Aug. 26 for an undisclosed amount and plans to relocate its Santa Rosa branch store to the new site sometime after April, according to manager Melanie Fivella.

“We’re going to have a beautiful high-end showroom to pull designers, architects and builders from Napa, Marin and Sonoma counties,” she said.

Founded in 1948, Bedrosians has about 30 stores in California, Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, Washington and Florida as well as distribution centers. The company also ships product to the rest of the country.

Bedrosians carries products such as slate pool pavers, engineered quartz, imported natural stone as well as glass, porcelin and ceramic tile. All but a handful of products are designed in-house and fabricated under contract.

“We have a high-end look on a low-end budget,” Ms. Fivella said.

The Bedrosian family opened the Santa Rosa store 18 years ago at its current location, 3646 Standish Ave. in the Industry West business park at the south end of the city. The family has been scouting Santa Rosa for a new location for five years, according to Ms. Fivella, who has been working at the branch since it opened and managing it for nearly 10 years.

Buildings present a unique opportunity to mitigate climate change and also enhance sustainable development. The utility companies intend to lease rooftop space from owners of large properties such as schools, warehouses and shopping malls and install 1 to 2 megawatts of solar power capacity at a time. The electricity generated will be fed into the existing electricity grid. These leasing programmes follow the “Renewable Portfolio Standard” that was enacted in many places in the United States, which requires a certain percentage of power supply to be met through renewable sources.

Utility companies in Singapore can emulate their American counterparts. Roof space is perhaps the only plausible space for the installation of PV systems in Singapore. The large capacity of a leasing programme can derive benefits from economies of scale though bulk orders of solar panels and long-term contracts. This will diversify our energy portfolio and ensure stable electricity prices throughout the leasing period.

The price of electricity generated from fossil fuel power stations varies with the cost of fuel (oil, gas or coal), while the price of electricity generated from solar systems is based on the initial cost of purchasing the equipment and maintenance cost. This locks in the electricity price, which remains fairly stable during the lifetime of the system.

The Singapore government is unlikely to implement a feed-in-tariff scheme for private owners of PV systems and there is no guarantee that excess electricity can be sold. In addition, property owners need to adhere to numerous rules and regulations before qualifying as electricity vendors. While the lifetime of a solar system is about 20 to 25 years, tenants who would use the power tend to have shorter tenancy periods of five to six years.

As a result, many owners of warehouses and office buildings are not inclined to commit to PV installations due to the uncertainty involved in ensuring the long-term availability of tenants who will purchase the electricity generated. Wayne exhibit comes to a close

The Joseloff Gallery located in the Harry Jack Gray Center was proud to exhibit the traveling showcase of artist Leslie Wayne in an exhibition titled “Leslie Wayne: Recent Work.”

Wayne’s work was on display from Aug. 30 through Oct 9. The last days of the gallery viewing were between 12-4pm where lovers of art and students of The Hartford Art School were welcome to come.

Along with the gallery viewing hours, included a reception on Thursday, Sept. 8 and a lecture given by Wayne herself in the Koopman Commons at the Hartford Art School.It's hard to beat the versatility of zentai suits on a production line.

Wayne’s work that was displayed came alive on the walls featuring many oil paintings that had very intricate structures and designs that had brilliant colors.

These dimensional oil paintings were inspired by the work of the 19-century paintings of Romantic Landscapes. The work did not only exhibit nature, but the world as a whole.

For me not being well verse in art, Wayne’s art was so intriguing because it wasn’t just a washed out oil paintings. These oil paintings had different dimensions and layers that the artist did to really convey and show the nature motif in her work.

This particular exhibition of Wayne’s work has been from the past five years (2005-2010) and takes a contemporary approach. The one painting that really caught my eye among the 20 oil paintings featured was titled “Doxology.”

“Doxology” was a 42” x 25” oil painting on wood, which was in a shape of a “T.” This particular painting showed many different hews of blue that were layered on the base, and a bright orange hew on top.

India's rural poor give up on power grid, go solar

Boommi Gowda used to fear the night. Her vision fogged by glaucoma, she could not see by just the dim glow of a kerosene lamp, so she avoided going outside where king cobras slithered freely and tigers carried off neighborhood dogs.

But things have changed at Gowda's home in the remote southern village of Nada. A solar-powered lamp pours white light across the front of the mud-walled hut she shares with her three grown children, a puppy and a newborn calf. Now she can now cook, tend to her livestock and get water from a nearby well at night.

Across India, thousands of homes are receiving their first light through small companies and aid programs that are bypassing the central electricity grid to deliver solar panels to the rural poor. With 40 percent of India's rural households lacking electricity and nearly a third of its 30 million agricultural water pumps running on subsidized diesel, "there is a huge market and a lot of potential," said Santosh Kamath, executive director of consulting firm KPMG in India. "Decentralized solar installations are going to take off in a very big way and will probably be larger than the grid-connected segment."

Next door to the Gowdas, 58-year-old Iramma, who goes by one name, frowned as she watched her neighbors light their home for the first time. At her house, electrical wiring dangles uselessly from the walls.

She said her family would wait for the grid. They've already given hundreds of dollars to an enterprising electrician who wired her house and promised service would come. They shouldn't have to pay even more money for solar panels, she insisted.

But she softened after her 16-year-old son interrupted to complain he was struggling in school because he cannot study at night like his classmates.

"We are very much frustrated," she said. "The children are very anxious. They ask every day, 'Why don't we have power like other people?' So if the grid doesn't come in a month, maybe we will get solar, too."

Despite decades of robust economic growth, there are still at least 300 million Indians - a quarter of the 1.2 billion population - who have no access to electricity at home. Some use cow dung for fuel, but they more commonly rely on kerosene, which commands premium black-market prices when government supplies run out.

They scurry during daylight to finish housework and school lessons. They wait for grid connections that often never come.

When people who live day-by-day on wage labor and what they harvest from the land choose solar, they aren't doing it to conserve fossil fuels, stop climate change or reduce their carbon footprints. To them, solar technology presents an elegant and immediate solution to powering everything from light bulbs and heaters to water purifiers and pumps.

"Their frustration is part of our motivation.We also offer customized chicken coop. Why are we so arrogant in deciding what the poor need and when they should get it?" said Harish Hande, managing director of Selco Solar Light Pvt. Ltd.

In two years, India's government hopes the off-grid solar yield will quadruple to 200 megawatts - enough to power millions of rural Indian homes with modest energy needs.

Boommi Gowda's family signed up for its solar system within weeks of seeing one at the home of neighbor Babu Gowda, who is not related but shares the common regional last name.

"With kerosene, you have to carry the lamp around wherever you go. The light is dim, and smoke fills the room and spoils the paint," said Babu Gowda, a sprightly 59-year-old.

He finally decided on solar after losing his dog to a tiger from the neighboring national park. Now light from his home wards off predators.

"I kept waiting and thinking the grid would come, and after years I was angry. But now I'm thrilled," he said. "Now we have light. We can move on, maybe expand with another solar panel and get a TV."

What's predicted for India's solar market is not unlike the recent explosion in cell phones, as villagers and slum-dwellers alike embraced mobile technology over lumbering landline connections. There is now at least one mobile phone link for every two people in the country.

The government has pushed for manufacturers and entrepreneurs to seize the opportunity. Its solar mission - an 11-year, $19 billion plan of credits, consumer subsidies and industry tax breaks to encourage investment - is fast becoming a centerpiece of its wider goal for renewable sources, including wind and small hydropower, to make up 20 percent of India's supply by 2020. Solar alone would provide 6 percent - a huge leap, since it makes up less than 1 percent of the 17 gigawatts India gets from renewables alone. The federal government leads a massive campaign titled "Light a Billion Lives" to distribute 200 million solar-powered lanterns to rural homes, while also supporting the creation of so-called "solar cities" with self-contained micro-grids in areas where supply is short.

Solar power is making inroads in smaller ways as well.

Near Nada, some schools send students home with solar-charged flashlights to study at night, and the temple town of Dharmasthala, visited by 10,000 pilgrims a day, offers free water purified through solar filtration.

Another Hindu temple in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh boasts one of the world's largest solar-powered kitchens, preparing 30,000 meals a day,is the 'solar panel revolution' upon us? while western Gujarat state has experimented with a solar crematorium. Even in the Himalayan frontier state of Arunachal Pradesh, where the sunshine is not India's brightest, Buddhist monks have installed solar panels to heat water at the 330-year Tawang Monastery.

The experience gained over the last year has made the new TE449 an even more competitive bike. The basic profile is unchanged, the 449 is still the bike that inspires love at first sight, with all the innovative technical features that put it amongst the market leaders in the sector. It was already exclusive, now it has become more streamlined and efficient. Aesthetically it is more pleasing, the chassis is now black, the rims anodised silver, new graphics emphasise the flow of the lines that express functionality, lightweight and style. Stronger frame, lower profile

The new version uses more 25CrMo4 chrome-moly steel to reinforce the steering head, the seat rail and engine mounts. The rear section ¨C now a single piece rear fender ¨C is stronger and more streamlined and the entire electrical system has been simplified and lightened. This optimises the wheelbase and enables the forward slant of the cylinder head, which lowers the centre of gravity and allows straighter inlet tracts for the engine.

The braking system is the trusted Brembo. The front braking disc has a diameter of no less than 260 mm, with a twin piston floating caliper, while the 240 mm rear disc has a light and compact single piston floating caliper.

More linear power delivery

The single cylinder, four valve, twin cam titanium valve engine is a recent design and needed few modifications, just some minor changes to the power curve. To better access and exploit all the power of the TE449, the designers concentrated on the mapping of the Keihin injection, which controls the action of the twin flap 46mm throttle body. Fine tuning included the balancing of the engine thermodynamics with the light steel Akrapovic exhaust, developed in collaboration with the prestigious Slovenian manufacturer. The efficiency of the cooling circuit was improved with change to the radiator, introducing a new WP component.

Unchanged are the six gears and clutch with soft and progressive hydraulic action. Weight is saved by eliminating a kick starter, which has proved to be superfluous, given the efficient and reliable electric ignition with high-power battery.
