Motivational speaker comes to three area schools

High School students in Escanaba, Gladstone and Hannahville will have the privilege of listening to motivational speaker Reggie Dabbs, thanks to the efforts of four youth group members at New Life Assembly of God Church. Dabbs will be speaking at all three schools on Monday, Oct. 31.

"He'll be mostly speaking about the pressures and choices that teens experience in their lives," said Escanaba High School senior, Trisha Larson. She is spearheading the efforts to bring Dabbs to the area along with fellow teens, Maggie Rose, Mikala Sauve, and Alanna Cooper, and youth group leader, Tiffany Albaugh.These girls have never had a oil painting supplies in their lives! "He's very moving and very connected with young kids," Trisha added.

Dabbs was born to an unwed teenager who, at one time considered abortion as a viable option for solving her "problem." With no place to go, the pregnant teen ended up living in a chicken coop in Tennessee. It was there she remembered a former school teacher, Mrs. Dabbs, who had once told her students, "If you ever need anything, call me," and gave the students her telephone number.

After receiving a phone call from the teen, the Dabbs family, which consisted of six adult children, took the teen into their home and cared for her until the baby's birth. They continued to care for little Reggie as foster parents until he was in the fourth grade, and then they officially adopted him and gave him the Dabbs name.

His parents instilled strong moral values on their youngest son and ingrained in him the fact that in every situation he faced, he had a choice. What he did with those choices was entirely up to him.

When he was in the sixth grade, Reggie began playing the saxophone and hated it. But his parents persevered and he continued to practice and to play and finally, while in his freshman year in college, he found he actually enjoy the instrument and continues to play with fervor and expertise.

Dabbs began his public speaking career after graduating from college and since 1987, he has become a popular public school speaker. In order to obtain permission to have Dabbs appear locally, Trisha said and a couple of her youth group leaders approached the principals of all the schools involved.

"We explained who Reggie is and what he does when he speaks to the kids," Trisha said. "We told them Reggie talks to them about self worth so they can make the right choices for their lives."

Trisha said Dabbs will speak with the Escanaba and Gladstone students early during the school day and will be at Hannahville in the afternoon.

"Then there's a rally open to everyone in the community at 7 p.m. at the Escanaba Middle School,It's hard to beat the versatility of zentai suits on a production line." Trisha said. "There's no charge."

New Life Church contributed the $3,000 needed to bring Dabbs to the area.

Tornado relief group targets "forgotten towns"

Leaders of a newly formed nonprofit group called Magnolia Disaster Relief are focusing on the "forgotten towns" hit hard by tornadoes in April.

Founder James O'Dwyer said those towns include Warm Springs and Trenton in Georgia.

Two proposed ordinances regarding snowplowing are under consideration

Stow -- While city officials agree snow that is plowed into the roadway can be a hazard especially when it melts and freezes again, City Council now has two choices regarding legislation to help correct the problem.
A proposed ordinance drawn up by Law Director Brian Reali would be handled by the city's zoning department instead of the police. It was introduced at Council's March 21 Roads and Safety Committee meeting.
"I don't think it's a police issue, and I don't think we need the police out chasing down snow complaints," said Reali, who drew up the ordinance at the request of Council.
A competing proposed ordinance submitted by the city's service department would be handled by the police.
The items remained in Council committee, and Council did not vote on either ordinance at its March 24 meeting.
City officials considered similar legislation last year, but it remained in committee and never reached Council for a vote.
Both current proposed ordinances prohibit snow being shoveled, plowed or blown into the streets.
For both, a warning would be issued first, then minor misdemeanor fines would be handed out.
A minor misdemeanor fine is a maximum of $150.
Reali said he wants to "avoid the problems of snow freezing to ice in the street."
Stow Service Director Dano Koehler agreed, saying, "If someone piles snow into the right of way, it causes a problem."
Koehler said when residents receive warnings about snow being blown into the street, they usually respond.
"This is a tool for folks who willfully want to dump snow into the right of way," Koehler said at the March 21 meeting. "Unfortunately, we lack a city code that directly addresses snow.
"There would have to be some visible evidence or an eyewitness to verify who is in violation of the code," Koehler said.
"Most of the time, it is obvious," he said. "If it is a contractor who has committed the violation, we would first question the resident who was receiving the service in order to get the information we need to issue a warning."
