The push to seize Charlotte Douglas International Airport from
decades of city control and hand it to a state-appointed authority has
gone from idle chatter to the brink of reality in a matter of weeks.
How
could one of the city’s crown jewels, a successful multi-million dollar
operation, be transferred to new ownership in less than a month?
The
answer is complicated, but one reason cited by city and airport sources
involves years of behind-the-scenes tension over airport management.
At the center of the controversy is 71-year-old aviation director Jerry Orr, who has bristled at city control of the airport.
Documents
obtained by The Observer show that the conflict between Orr and his
bosses came to a head in 2010. The documents outline an Internal Revenue
Service audit and a later city report that found the airport violated
federal tax law as it allocated millions of dollars in bond money to pay
for airport improvements.
In April, 2011, the city placed stricter financial controls on the airport, removing some of the autonomy that Orr had enjoyed.
The
city’s finance director, Greg Gaskins, said that the problem – stemming
from more than $150 million in bonds from 2004 – was only an accounting
issue. After the city review, the IRS decided not to fine the city and
didn’t remove tax-exempt status from the bonds.
But several city
officials told the Observer that then-City Manager Curt Walton believed
the problem was serious. They said that Walton had considered
disciplining Orr.
The officials asked not to be named because
Orr’s relationship with Walton could be considered a personnel issue,
which is private under state law.
After the Democratic National
Convention last September, relations between the city and Orr became
more strained. In November, the city transferred control of airport
police from Orr to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department.
That
followed a highly publicized incident in November 2010 where a
Mecklenburg teenager, Devonte Tisdale, is believed by law enforcement to
have breached Charlotte Douglas security and stowed away in the wheel
well of a jet. His body was found near Logan airport in Boston, where
police believe it fell from a Boeing 737 as it prepared to land.
After
the incident, Orr said he didn’t think security changes were needed.
But Walton asked Charlotte police to investigate. In 2011,Comprehensive
Wi-Fi and RFID tag
by Aeroscout to accurately locate and track any asset or person. the
CMPD investigation determined that the airport needed more people
working security. It also said that perimeter fencing should be
improved.
Bill Brawley and Sen. Bob Rucho,Wear a whimsical Disney ear cap
straight from the Disney Theme Parks! both Matthews Republicans, are
leading an effort to create an independent Charlotte Regional Airport
Authority that would oversee the airport. Rucho introduced a bill last
week that would create an 11-member board with a majority of members
appointed by surrounding counties and state politicians.
If the
airport were to move to an independent authority, its finances would be
removed from city oversight and approval. The board would oversee the
airport’s finances,We've got a plastic card to suit you. including the issuance of bonds.
Supporters
of a more independent airport, such as Airport Advisory Committee
member Ed McMahan, have told the Observer they became concerned by what
they see as efforts for the city to exercise more control.
A
Charlotte Douglas airport deputy director made a recent fact-finding
trip to Asheville, where control of the airport was shifted from the
city to an authority.
Orr said that he couldn’t comment on
whether the 2010 bond review or the ensuing stricter financial controls
are linked to the push for an authority.
“I’m not the one pushing the airport authority, so I really can’t answer that,The USB flash drives wholesale is our flagship product.” he said.
But
earlier in January, before the authority bill was introduced at the
General Assembly, Orr said in interviews that the airport would benefit
from being run by an authority. He reiterated his position that the
airport needs to function like a business, not as a city
department.Application can be conducted with the local designated IC card producers.

The prime time wild card
It’s a massive office with 20-foot-high ceiling. The mahogany desk
on one side adds to the sombre atmosphere of hushed silences and
austere power. An archway leads to an office meant only for secretarial
staff much smaller in comparison, but big enough for several captains
of industry. Walls adorned with large oil paintings of famous
parliamentarians look down benignly. Behind the mahogany desk on a
large green leather chair sits only the second woman to occupy that
seat since Independence. It’s the office of the Leader of the
Opposition in the Lok Sabha, generally perceived to be the second most
significant post after the Prime Minister. When Parliament is in
session, Sushma Swaraj is seen more at the main gate with her fellow
boycotting other members, but that does not mean she has not done her
homework. On the great FDI debate in December, her research on the
subject and eloquence nearly took the day. She kept it focused, talking
to the country through Parliament. “Will Wal-Mart care about the poor
farmer’s sister’s wedding? Will Wal-Mart send his children to school?
Will Wal-Mart notice his tears and hunger?” Her speech stirred the
Lohiaites and was more convincing than the Left. In the end, 14 parties
stood behind her. The vote was lost by a whisker, but an evolving
reputation was clad in iron.
At the investors’ meet that took place in November 2012 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, her home state now, she arrived a little late as her flight had been delayed. Speeches by industrial leaders and politicians were immediately put on hold and a small wooden stool pushed behind the lectern for her to stand on. There were smiles all around. A stool is kept handy when Swaraj must make a speech. Most people are surprised when they first see Swaraj. She is petite—less than five feet—but her school headmistress demeanour makes everyone else appear a nursery kid, looking up at her. She loves to make small talk in informal settings with people around her and never forgets to ask the well-being of family members if she happens to have met them. At smaller,I thought it would be fun to show you the inspiration behind the broken china-mosaics. cosier ladies’ sangeet-type family functions she is unafraid of shaking a leg, though it dusted up a little wind at Raj Ghat when she danced to a patriotic number.
The Shiv Sena is convinced of her ability to connect,We specializes in rapid plastic injection mould and molding of parts for prototypes and production. and lead the NDA alliance. There are others who believe Narendra Modi could be that person. The party itself does not want a debate on the issue right now. An exasperated Rajnath Singh recently said: “This is the last time I am asking BJP leaders to desist from making any comments on BJP’s prime ministerial candidate.” But the issue will come up sooner rather than later with May 2014 not very far away and it will all come down to the ability to keep alliance partners happy.
The Jaipur conclave of the Congress, meanwhile, has made it clear that it is looking around for partners and tie-ups. Some of the current parties in the UPA fold may leave, like the TMC. It may have to look around for newer ones, preferably those currently aligned with the NDA, on the possibility of shared secular agendas. “The Congress would be most happy to take on Modi as it may lead to fissure in the NDA with the JD(U) opting out a distinct possibility. The SP and BSP may also be forced to junk their neutral outside-support stance,” says a Congress veteran. The mood at 24 Akbar Road is that Swaraj would be a tougher opponent with her appeal cutting across sections and communities.
That drama will unfold in coming months, but the Swaraj story looks set to get bigger,Laser engravers and laser engraving machine systems and supplies to start your own lasering cutting engraving marking etching business. and within the BJP first. Not since Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia have there been so many woman leaders of substance in the party—Uma Bharti, Vasundhara Raje and Sushma Swaraj. They have all taken different stairwells to the top. Bharti was the maverick firebrand who led the Ram Janmabhoomi movement till her first brush with serious power destabilised her and she stumbled. Raje, the Maharani, took her time but came into her own about 10 years ago when she led the BJP to power in Rajasthan, and though she missed a step later, she is back in saddle and ready to propel the party to power in her state. Swaraj’s of course has been the most significant success so far.
In the hype and hoopla and downslide games that have engaged the BJP and its leaders lately, Swaraj appears to have survived in the best shape. She’s fine-tuned her knack for saying the right thing at the right time in the right place, be it the FDI debate, an election in Gujarat, or politely refusing to become BJP president.
It first emerged in the media that L K Advani had floated her name as possible BJP president to replace Nitin Gadkari when it became clear that corruption allegations would sink his boat. “Advaniji had only said that there are suitable replacements. Two options are Sushma and Rajnath, and if the former is accepted then Leaders of Opposition in both Houses will have to be changed,” says a senior BJP party office-bearer. Sensing this was not be the right time to accept the job, Swaraj quietly told Advani of her reluctance, and later conveyed it to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat as well.
She has consciously played on the right side of the RSS on all issues, sending a consistent message to Nagpur which is sometimes considered overly gender-sensitive in assigning roles. Throughout the past six months when the Sarsanghchalak was insistent that his nominee Nitin Gadkari be given a second term, she kept a calculated middle-of-the-road stance: never a word against the RSS line and still never seen to be against those opposed to Gadkari. It’s marvellous political posturing when everyone considers you “safe” including man of the moment Modi. At an election rally in Vadodara, she announced unequivocally: “Modiji mein woh sab qualities hain jo ek Prime Minister mein honi chahiye” (Modiji has those qualities which a prime minister should have). Others in the party are at the moment ambivalent on the subject, in accordance with a keep mum policy. “She is the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and that in itself should be a pointer towards what the party expects from her,” says Prabhat Jha who has worked closely with Vajpayee and was till recently the BJP president of the Madhya Pradesh unit.
Raje, presently locked in a fierce intra-party struggle for supremacy within Rajasthan, may emerge with her stature enhanced by December if she delivers. She has the backing of Rajnath which saw her back in saddle as the state unit chief. That makes the equation interesting. Her appeal is quite unlike Swaraj’s though the base is as wide. Having won four Lok Sabha elections and been a Union minister, at 50 she acquired a common touch to lead a BJP resurgence in Rajasthan as she tirelessly travelled the dusty roads to annex the Jaipur crown. Her regal persona, the expensive sarees and jewellery only enhance her appeal in a curious inversion of what makes Swaraj tick. Outside the state and at BJP national executives, she is perhaps the only one signing autographs!
Most opinion polls over the past six months show her several points ahead of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot. She will, of course, have to battle expectations as well. The BJP not only expects her to topple Gehlot with a clear majority but also deliver 20 of the 25 Lok Sabha seats. If that happens it could make her one of the most powerful sub-group leaders within the BJP, almost at par with Modi.
Swaraj’s breakthrough moment had come when she was nominated to Rajya Sabha in 1990 and moved out of state politics. BJP was riding the Ram Mandir wave. Bharti and Advani were on its crest but the think-tank was also planning for the long term. As education minister in Haryana, she had impressed the RSS and Advani. Her stock went further up with the advent of 24-hour television.
Some politicians like to contest this but the coming of 24-hour television in 1992 shaped and reshaped the careers of many. Swaraj was a natural and almost made for TV. Her bindi-sindoor clicked with the viewing class with its new-found love for the saas-bahu shows.Compare prices and buy all brands of solar panel for home power systems and by the pallet. Judgments based on appearance, likeability and intelligent sound bites started pouring in fast. “She was the best bahu on view though sometimes overshadowed by the aggression of Bharti,” says a long-time associate. Nevertheless it helped her leapfrog over her contemporaries and shed the confines of state politics. She was sent to the affluent South Delhi constituency with arguably the most cable homes in the country in 1996 and 1998 before she briefly became Delhi chief minister in 1998. In 1999 she took up the legendary Bellary challenge against the Congress’s Sonia Gandhi. All along she knew that her stature would be enhanced even in loss.
Television, in fact, might have thrown up some more interesting names among women leaders in the wake of Swaraj becoming the most serious candidate for the top job since Indira Gandhi. These women are expected to evolve over the next few years and none seems to be more promising than Smriti Irani, 36. The other is Nirmala Sitharaman.
Irani rode the Tulsi avatar to land in the party of her choice, but Advani sees in her the same potential that he once saw in Bharti and Swaraj in their younger days. Advani’s ability to pick winner is proven. The mere mention of Irani’s name in his book My Country My Life served as a red carpet rolled out for her right into top echelons of 11 Ashoka Road. She now heads the Mahila Morcha and is a Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat. Former journalist Sitharaman, 54, of course is now better known than when she was as a member of National Women’s Commission. Her combative stance on issues on national television are significant signs of a developing thought leader within the party.
The Women’s Reservation Bill, which Sonia’s own partymen are believed to be buttonholing from behind the curtains,How cheaply can I build a solar power systems? if passed may lead to a flood of more women leaders emerging from the grassroots. It is also believed that the BJP might be better prepared if the Bill indeed becomes a reality. It has actively built a cadre of women leaders both at the national and the state levels. Some states have even held taluka-level meetings of Mahila Morcha regularly in an attempt to not only multiply the voter base but find leaders from the grassroots. In comparison Congress is still dependent on family heiresses, widows and wives.

Welcome to the club
The Alpena wrestling team has battled through some rough patches
this season, but coach Jake Stenz has been patient with his wrestlers
and they've improved as the season has progressed and have achieved some
great individual success.
Four Alpena wrestlers have made it to a Division 1 individual regional today at Saginaw Heritage High School: R.J. Centala,You must not use the laser cutter without being trained. Aleco Hantzis, Dakota Patterson and Felix Suszek.
Getting to regionals is always a big deal, but for Centala (140 pounds) and Hantzis (heavyweight) it's epic: Centala picked up his 100th win with his last match at individual districts, a win that sent him to regionals. Hantzis is making it to the regionals as a sophomore, something his older brother Andreas also achieved.
"Getting it (the 100th win) on the last match of the day, on the match that sent me to regionals was amazing.Ein innovativer und moderner Werkzeugbau Formenbau. I can't imagine a better feeling in the world. I got a whole lot of congratulations from everybody, from my family and friends and all my teammates," he said.
Centala also participates in cross country and track. Beyond the family connection, he was drawn to wrestling due to its achievement-based nature.
"It's individual. There's no politics. If you're better than somebody else, you start. There's no second guessing or favoritism," Centala said. "I've been wrestling since I was four. There's a huge history of wrestling in my family, mostly on my dad's side. My dad, my uncle, my cousins and basically all the guys on that side wrestled for Rogers City."
Stenz finds that this support from a young age was key to Centala's success.
"Part of his success is due to the youth programs he participated in, but a lot of it has to due with his practice partners. He spent two years with Andreas Hantzis who really helped mold him into a great wrestler," he said.
"I've had constant support from my dad, from the school and from my coach (Stenz). They've really helped me get up into the higher levels and have constantly taught me new things about wrestling," he said.
Centala hopes to attend either Grand Valley State or Olivet to become a middle school history and science teacher. He is leaning towards Olivet as Grand Valley has no wrestling program.
Hantzis' family history of wrestling may not be as intensive as Centala's, but his brother Andreas made it to regionals several times and has helped spark Aleco's interest in the sport. Aleco has been wrestling since junior high.
He participates in wrestling and track too but finds wrestling to be his favorite sport by a long shot.Application can be conducted with the local designated IC card producers.
"It's really aggressive. It's one of those sports that really takes a lot of talent. You can't fake your way through a match you really have to wrestle hard and earn a win," he said.
Hantzis is looking forward to the chance to compete in the regional championship.
"Everybody looks really equal this year.Did you know that custom keychain chains can be used for more than just business. It's really a fair field but I definitely think there's a chance I could win," he said.
Stenz praised his wrestlers, noting that their hard work has helped them reach this point.
"R.We've had a lot of people asking where we had our make your own bobblehead made.J. is really getting great as is Aleco. They're always key wrestlers n every meet. Dakota Patterson has to be getting really close to hitting 100 at this point and J.D. Niergarth is gonna end up just shy," Stenz said. "It's really a testament to the skill of these kids. They've competed against wrestlers from schools like Davison who are the second in the state and in the top 50 in the nation. And they've beat them! The fact that they can pick up 100 wins playing against teams like this just shows how talented and hard working they are," he said.
"Sports has been the most positive thing that I've been involved with throughout my life. You have expectations when you're part of sports teams. It was good for me to have that. Coming to school every day. Going to practice. Getting good grades," Gormley said.
"For him, who cares about the playoffs? The big picture for him is June. He's got a future. He's a bright kid and he listens and he wants to learn," said Jason Briggs, Waterville's boys basketball coach. "This is a game. You have to remind him, with all you've been through, this is a game."
It was the January of Gormley's sophomore year when he gave up on school. You don't go to school for a day. Then you skip the next day, and the next. Then you realize, you're a drop out.
"I didn't come for a week, then I'd come for a couple of days," Gormley said. "I was dealing with a lot of problems outside of school, and basically I made some bad choices that resulted in me dropping out."
Briggs remembers Gormley coming off the bench and playing well, helping the Purple Panthers win at Mt. View on a Friday night.

Khan is appearing in Seattle on Wednesday night as part of a tour for his new book, The One World Schoolhouse — about his personal story and the future of education,The cost of cleaning just 2 infected lenses is already higher than the cost of a dry cabinet. including the concept of “the flipped classroom.”
In advance of his visit, I spoke with Khan this morning about the evolution of Khan Academy, his entrepreneurial journey, his connection to Bill Gates, the technology he uses, and his current thoughts on technology in the classroom. Part of my joy is that I still spend at least 30 percent of my time still making videos,Compare prices and buy all brands of solar panel for home power systems and by the pallet. but that’s me personally. Khan Academy as an organization, the videos are an important part, but just a part. Most of our resources are actually around building the, for lack of a better word, the product — which is the interactive software, the dashboard, the analytics, the tools for teachers, which the videos to some degree only complement. If a student gets stuck on an exercise, the videos are there,Source crystal mosaic Products at Mosaics. and they might be helpful for them. If a teacher sees on the dashboard that a student is struggling, maybe the videos could be a line of intervention. So we have that piece.
We’re almost a 40-person organization. Two-thirds are essentially software engineers working on that type of thing. The other third — I still produce the majority of the videos, but we actually have a few other folks who are producing videos, as well. We have members of our team that go and interface with schools. Khan Academy started as a project for supplemental free tutoring on the web, and we kind of inadvertently started to be used in schools, so we have a team that interfaces with teachers, with schools, trying to understand what’s working and what’s not — communicating that to other schools and teachers. We have experimented with things like summer camps, summer programs, to understand what you can do with the physical environment.
It’s hard to say how much of your own experience is generalizable. I would say the big, big thing is perseverance. The only reason we’re having this conversation, the only reason Khan Academy exist,s is that there was four years where it was just something that I kept doing. I would meet people who would say, “Why are you doing this? You’re not going to make money off of this. What do you think you’re doing?” I was like, that’s fine, but I really enjoy it,Don't make another silicone mold without these invaluable Mold Making supplies and accessories! so I’m going to keep doing it. You could tell it almost frustrates them that you continue to do it. “I’m telling you all these reasons that you shouldn’t do it, and this idiot is saying that he enjoys it.” You can’t understate how important that it is.
Different ventures start in different ways. Sometimes it is, you join Y Combinator, you get funding, and you’re off the ground in three months or six months.A ridiculously low price on this All-Purpose solar lantern by Gordon. In my case it wasn’t that. It was four, five years, and I wasn’t suffering those four, five years. I had a job. This was a hobby. I felt like I was seeing progress, I felt good about it. There were people on YouTube who were sending me thank you letters. I felt like, hey, this is doing something. So let me keep going.
But it did require an entrepreneurial leap around 2009, when I wanted to do this full time. I’ll be frank, that was scarier. You see a lot of people who quit their jobs and are not thinking about the repercussions. I thought a lot about the repercussions of quitting my job and doing this. Some people quit their jobs when it’s just a business plan. I would argue that’s almost not advised, at least if you have my mindset. By the time I quit, the site had several hundred thousand people using it every month. We’d gotten some kind of minor external validation at that point. We had some pretty good press at that point, but at the same time it was scary because it was so non-traditional.
I guess that’s the counterpoint — it maybe is less scary to write the business plan and go for venture funding, because that’s such a done thing. Versus starting a non-profit around YouTube videos and this free virtual school. There’s no pattern that you can look at (as a precedent). It’s more like, this is a strange new pattern that I’m trying to prove out.
I think that’s right. As entrepreneurial and creative and revolutionary as we all like to think we are, we all take comfort if we’re fitting a mold, fitting a pattern. I think you’re right, it’s a huge opportunity. But it’s a high-variance situation, is the most rational way to think about it. If you look at the great entrepreneurial stories — and Khan Academy has a lot of work to do before it can fall into that category — but if you think of the Microsofts of the world, there was no such thing as a software company when they started. It was like, “That’s crazy, you’re going to make money off of selling people bits and bytes?” That was strange in the late 70s. But they did it.
I’ll say it’s good, and surreal, from my point of view. He’s incredibly smart and thoughtful and nice. You hear these stories about him being very hard on people or whatever, but I have never seen that. He asks tough questions, and you can’t bullshit him, but if you’re intellectually honest, and you say what you know, and you say what you don’t know, and you’re just honest in that way, he likes that. When I first met him, 90 percent of my brain was saying, “You’re meeting Bill Gates, you’re meeting Bill Gates.” Surreal. Now I would say 20 percent of my brain does that.
There’s kind of a side story, at least for me personally, with this whole experience. I’ve had the opportunity to interface with a lot of less-than-normal (but in a good way) people — people of note, I guess. The big takeaway I’ve had is how down-to-Earth all of them are. But at the same time how smart. It really isn’t an accident that they got to where they are.
You know, I started on a Windows PC. The funny thing is, a lot of people in our organization use Macs. We’re trying to build a culture in our organization where if you have to communicate something, make a video. That way people can get it on demand. It’s funny, because Macs are normally associated with creative work, and artists. But I’ve actually had trouble getting the same experience on a Mac that I’ve gotten on a Windows PC. I talk about the same experience. For me, when I’m writing, it’s very important that it’s unbelievably responsive. Even a micro-second lag throws it off a bit. I’ve actually had trouble using it on a Mac, period. And on top of that, it’s what I’m used to. I’ll be frank — I think a lot of the long-held reservations about Windows got solved with Windows 7, at least in my mind.

Special-interest push for South Carolina interstate hits roadblock
Business leaders in Myrtle Beach, S.C., tried every tactic they could
to win $1.3 billion in funding for Interstate 73, a six-lane gateway to
their seaside getaway.
They coaxed dozens of members of Congress to tour the area, including five who’ve chaired key committees, escorting some of them aboard helicopters for aerial views of clogged traffic in one of the country’s most popular resort communities.
The highway’s backers commissioned economic studies that showed the road would generate jobs,Basics, technical terms and advantages and disadvantages of Laser engraver. industry and development. They bought TV ads. They hired former congressmen and a onetime chairman of the Democratic National Committee to lobby in Washington.
Myrtle Beach-area businessmen, road builders and their family members poured nearly $1.4 million into the campaign coffers of South Carolina Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham and Jim DeMint, three home-state congressmen, state legislators and political parties.
“I-73 is the largest economic development project in South Carolina history,” Graham has said repeatedly.
Environmentalists hit back with studies that said upgrades to existing highways could deliver almost as much economic benefit at a tenth of the cost. But they found themselves outmatched by the deep-pocketed, well-connected alliance pushing the new road.
Beginning in 2005, I-73 boosters secured more than $125 million from Congress and the state Department of Transportation for a 5.7-mile stretch of asphalt that would give them the beachhead they sought: an exit from I-95, the busiest travel corridor along the Eastern Seaboard.
But for all the money the highway’s supporters spent, the lobbyists they hired and the positive reports they printed, they have yet to get it built.
And for all their warnings of environmental destruction and runaway development, opponents couldn’t stop it, either.
In a testament to the condition of the nation’s highway finances, South Carolina ran out of money before it could put the first shovel in the ground.
With the country short at least $14 billion a year in federal funding to maintain bridges and highways, other states are putting the brakes on new projects,Like most of you, I'd seen the broken buy mosaic decorated pieces. including many for which their members of Congress secured priority status and federal funding.
A deeper look at the still-unfinished saga of I-73 and Myrtle Beach offers a glimpse of how private interests may influence decisions over highway spending and put projects on a fast track.
“There’s no appropriate strategy for introducing Congress and the state legislature to our transportation issues in this region of South Carolina that we have not taken full advantage of,” said Republican state Rep. Alan Clemmons, who leads a six-state coalition that’s seeking funds for I-73.
In the absence of clear national goals for federal transportation funding, projects such as I-73 have turned into a tug of war between highway promoters and environmentalists.
Both sides commissioned studies that came to opposite conclusions.
The environmentalists say that upgrading existing roads would be cheaper without destroying forests and wetlands. The highway backers say the new interstate would generate thousands of jobs and save thousands of lives by creating a hurricane evacuation route.
Without a truly independent analysis, it’s hard to know whether the road is worth building.
“I-73 would have the largest environmental impact of any infrastructure project in this state in a generation,” said Nancy Cave, who directs the Coastal Conservation League’s operations along South Carolina’s northern coast.
A study that Cave’s group paid for concluded that upgrading U.S. 501, a parallel four-lane highway, for about $150 million would avert any environmental damage and achieve much of the desired economic growth.
The backers of I-73 countered with their own study. They paid Parsons Brinckerhoff, an engineering firm that designs highways, for an analysis that showed an upgraded U.S. 501 couldn’t compare with the economic boon of a six-lane interstate.
Brad Dean, the president of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, told McClatchy that the study and others financed by I-73 backers had found that the interstate would create more than 29,000 jobs, boost tourism and industry, and provide a fast hurricane-evacuation route that would “save 40,000-plus lives.”
For more than a decade, I-73 has been the Myrtle Beach chamber’s top priority, Dean said. The chamber joined forces with the larger six-state coalition in the 1990s to galvanize support for I-73 and a second interstate, I-74, that would connect the Midwest with the Carolinas.
The chamber’s strategy wasn’t, however, about creating new freeways to the Midwest. It was to lock in money for the road it wanted, starting with what I-73 supporters dubbed the “interchange of hope,” an exit from I-95 that would take vacationers straight to Myrtle Beach.
“I think it’s an established principle that as soon as you lay your first foot of asphalt, you’ve now taken the project from concept to reality,” Clemmons said.
In 2000, members of South Carolina’s congressional delegation had secured the first of tens of millions of dollars in congressional earmarks for a bypass near the town of Conway, 20 miles northwest of Myrtle Beach. That $386 million project, completed with state and county funds, eventually would link with I-73.
Next the I-73 forces set their sights on the 2005 federal transportation bill, which contained 6,300 earmarks for projects around the country. The road’s lobbyists, including two former South Carolina congressmen and former Democratic National Committee Chairman Don Fowler, roamed the hallways of Congress.
I-73 was a big winner, getting the first of nearly $100 million in earmarks. It was designated a “Project of Regional and National Significance.”
Chamber President Dean credited Graham,Which Air purifier is right for you? Republican then -Rep. Henry Brown, who was on the House highways subcommittee, and Republican Sen. In 2007, Graham invited then-U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters, a former federal highway administrator, to visit the area.
Graham has received at least $78,619 in campaign donations from the businesses that back the interstate and another $158,951 from state road builders and highway engineers in the past 15 years.

New Public Art Projects In the Works
AAPAC chair Marsha Chamberlin described a collaboration with the
city’s parks system to use old canoes for a community art project. The
effort also involves the Main Street Area Association and Ann Arbor
Convention & Visitors Bureau. She indicated the project would seek
private donations and grants, but probably not funds from the city’s
Percent for Art program, which is currently under review by the city
council.
The commission also heard from Linda Tenza, a resident who came to the Jan. 23 meeting to make an informal proposal for creating murals on the ceilings of the farmers market shelter. Likening it to a Sistine Chapel effect, Tenza suggested painting food-themed murals on the ceilings of the structures that cover the market aisles. Possible themes include food as medicine, the local farm community, seasonal fruits and vegetables, and the history of farming.
Although Tenza’s project is still tentative,Ein innovativer und moderner Werkzeugbau Formenbau. one public art project that’s definitely coming to Ann Arbor is the Detroit Institute of Art’s Inside|Out program, which involves installing framed reproductions from the DIA’s collection at outdoor locations on building facades or in parks. Two private Ann Arbor businesses – Zingerman’s Deli and the downtown Borders store – were part of the program in 2010. Since then the DIA has been talking periodically with AAPAC and city staff about expanded participation.Compare prices and buy all brands of solar panel for home power systems and by the pallet.
The works will be hung from late March through June at several downtown locations, including on the facade of city hall and on the wall of the fire station that faces the Ann Arbor Hands On Museum. An official announcement about the project, including a listing of all locations, will be made at a Feb. 8 DIA press conference.
In other action at AAPAC’s Jan. 23 meeting, commissioners expressed frustration with the proposed design of a sign for the Herbert Dreiseitl water sculpture in front of city hall, calling it too “busy” with text and images that are unclear. Nor were they pleased with the proposed description of the piece that’s included on the sign: “Sculpture with Water Feature.” Chamberlin agreed to discuss their concerns with Ken Clein of Quinn Evans Architects, which handled the design.
Commissioners were also updated on several ongoing projects, including the selection of public art for the East Stadium bridges. A public engagement proposal for that $400,000 project – which might serve as a template for other projects – elicited some debate. John Kotarski objected to a recommendation that part of each artist’s interview with a selection panel should be held in private. He felt strongly that the process should be open and transparent. Wiltrud Simbuerger, who presented the recommendation, felt that the selection panel needs a “safe place” for their deliberations.
The Jan. 23 meeting included a discussion of officer elections, which AAPAC’s bylaws call for in January. The elections were ultimately postponed because only four commissioners were present at that point in the 2.5-hour meeting. Chamberlin has been serving as chair since April of 2011. Malverne Winborne is vice chair.
Also factoring into the issue of officer elections was the uncertainty of AAPAC’s future. The city council has suspended expenditures for future projects pending review of the public art program by a council committee appointed last December. Chamberlin, who has attended all meetings of that committee, gave an update to commissioners, but noted that no decisions have yet been made. The committee is expected to give its recommendations to the full council in mid-February – its next meeting is on Feb. 7. This report includes a summary of the committee’s most recent deliberations.
The issue of developing a sign for the Herbert Dreiseitl water sculpture has been discussed at various AAPAC meetings for about a year. At the Jan. 23 meeting, commissioners reviewed the proposed sign that had been developed by Quinn Evans Architects and city communications staff.
Commissioners raised several concerns about the sign,A ridiculously low price on this All-Purpose solar lantern by Gordon. which would be 11 inches by 17 inches and located on top of a mesh fence that will be installed at the end of the walkway overlooking the sculpture. The sign is intended to highlight the sculpture’s meaning and how it fits into the context of the plaza’s rain garden and stormwater management system.
In general, commissioners felt the sign was too “busy” – with too much text as well as imagery that’s unclear. Malverne Winborne called the sign’s image of the sculpture a “Rorschach test,” saying he’d thought at first that it looked like the spine of a notebook binder. Several others also said they hadn’t initially realized that the image was intended to be the sculpture. One difficulty is that the sign shows the sculpture as viewed from the side, though the sign will be placed facing the back of the sculpture. Another issue is that the sign was originally conceived of as two separate signs, but at some point they were combined into one.
Winborne suggested eliminating much of the text and including a QR code that would direct people to a website with more information.
In addition to paring down the text and images, Wiltrud Simbuerger wanted to find a different name for the piece. Currently,Don't make another silicone mold without these invaluable Mold Making supplies and accessories! the title on the sign is “Sculpture with Water Feature.Nitrogen Controller and Digital dry cabinet with good quality.” Bob Miller suggested naming the sculpture “The Promise of Water.” John Kotarski said it was his understanding that Dreiseitl didn’t want to give the work a title.
Marsha Chamberlin offered to sit down with Ken Clein, a principal with Quinn Evans Architects, the Ann Arbor firm that handled the design of the new Justice Center and city hall renovation, and oversaw its construction – a project that included the Dreiseitl sculpture.

Council wants action on Village Entrance
The City Council spent about half of its annual retreat talking about the Village Entrance project.
A top council priority in 2012, the project was the major topic of discussion again this year at the retreat, held Saturday at the South County Water District offices on West Street.Other companies want a piece of that iPhone headset action
"Over 18 years ago, a Village Entrance task force of community members, including representatives from our Planning Commission, Arts Commission, arts and business groups — as well as Village Laguna — created a concept for the Village Entrance," said Mayor Pro Tem Elizabeth Pearson.
The concept included rehabbing the historical digester building and putting it to use, creating a meandering pedestrian park, and constructing a parking garage that isn't a visual blight while adding parking spaces.
Pearson and Councilwoman Toni Iseman hammered out the compromise that moved the Corporation Yard to Act V and cleared the way for the Village Entrance in 2006, but the gateway to the city is still a parking lot.
"We need to follow through … and create a beautiful entryway into our city that includes additional parking," Pearson said.
Pearson and Iseman have been conferring this past year on how to get the concept off the drawing board.
"The Village Entrance is more than a park and a parking structure," Iseman said Tuesday. "We have to integrate the information from all the studies and reports to do things right.
"Parking, the Downtown Specific Plan, the Art District, shuttles and the transit system all have to be considered."
The project won't be cheap, but it is doable, provided the council reverts to using the city's parking fund for what it was intended — the creation of parking spaces, such as the Glenneyre Street Parking structure, according to Pearson.
Pearson has long been critical of the practice of transferring parking funds to the general fund to balance the city's budget, about $7 million in 10 years.
She said untapped parking revenue would support a revenue bond to help pay for the Village Entrance and some funding for the park,Laser engraving and laser laser cutting machine for materials like metal, garage and the digester might be available through grants.

Still Shameless after all these years
The Chatsworth Estate is celebrating a milestone. Carrie Gregory brushes up on her swear words and sneaks behind the scenes of the 100th episode of Shameless
It's not much to look at.Initially the banks didn't want our chicken coop . Piles of rubbish lie at every graffiti-covered corner, a run-down pub is brought to life only by the odd empty beer can tinkling in the wind outside, while every modest-looking house is a carbon copy of the next.
But the Chatsworth Estate is so convincing, it's surreal to think it's actually a built-for-purpose set in the middle of a remote industrial estate in Manchester's Wythenshawe.
And, as Paul Abbott's Bafta award-winning drama approaches its 100th episode - the premise having already been snatched up by our American cousins - the set is now an iconic piece of television history.
We come across Tina Malone, who's sitting cross-legged, twirling her character Mimi's hair extensions around her not-so-perfectly manicured nails. She's wrapped up in a bright pink fluffy dressing gown that wouldn't look out of place on Lily Savage's dressing room floor, and doesn't need any prompting to say how proud she is to film the milestone episode.
"I'm incredibly flattered," 48-year-old Malone says.
"I'm quite arrogant. I'm known for being ruthless and opinionated. I'm very self-absorbed and self-obsessed, like many actors, so I'm happy to give myself a pat on the back.there's a lovely winter polished tiles by William Zorach. Not only for being in a long-running show but also for the standard and quality of it."
This sentiment is echoed by all of the actors here at Shameless. Not one of them, even when pushed,Enecsys Limited, supplier of reliable solar RUBBER MATS systems, could think of a downside to their day job.
After Abbott penned the series, which is loosely based on his family life growing up, it aired to an uncertain audience in 2004. But that same audience soon warmed to the eternally drunk Frank Gallagher and his clan and,Traditional China Porcelain tile claim to clean all the air in a room. while the show has had many a facelift in the ensuing years, its popularity remains the same.
Regular viewers will be pleased to hear that this significant episode largely focuses on Frank, who yet again gets on the wrong side of the law in ways only he could know how. He doesn't have an alibi,This will leave your shoulders free to rotate in their oil painting supplies . though, because he was so inebriated at the time, he can't remember what he was doing.
