"I saw his name on it and tracked him down," he said. "I wanted to purchase a print of the painting I saw and he told me he does not make prints."

Nor did Mehok have any records of the paintings he had painted.

Harbrant is retired from the AFL-CIO. He loves the fact that Mehok holds union cards for the United Miner Workers, the Steelworkers and the Laborer's Union, in addition to being such a gifted painter. He will be sharing Mehok's work with his fellow union members at a showing at the union headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Mehok has had other showings. This past February his work was on display at Goldhaber-Fend Gallery in Westmont. He has also won a first place prize for a painting of his in a statewide competition more than 20 years ago.

Mehok does not know how much longer he will be able to paint because of failing eyesight. He has macular degeneration and has had 15 shots in his eyes to stop the progression.

The only regret he has is throwing a letter away he received from Norman Rockwell.

"I wrote him and he wrote back and I threw the letter away," he said.

The Eurkea Coal Heritage Foundation vice president Ron Corl, who is friends with Harbrant, is excited about the calendar. He became a collector of Mehok's work after seeing a painting of his on his friend, Ted Hollern's office wall.

"I saw a painting on Ted's wall and liked it. He told me who painted it and I called Mehok and stopped by to see what he had and bought several of his paintings," he said.If so, you may have a cube puzzle .

Corl sponsored the original calendar idea to raise funds for the work of the foundation.

"I knew I liked his paintings especially the ones with the mining theme because of being in the (coal) business," Corl said. Hard working immigrant peoples and booming companies populated the area and was the mainstay of the local economy. Colorado ski resorts hope for piles of snow after banner year

An exploding gas cylinder ripped the side off a townhouse in Helderkruin, Roodepoort, on Wednesday, resulting in a man being severely burnt.

The explosion rocked the townhouse complex of Land’s End at 6.20am. The injured man, Zakile Mhaubanga, was airlifted to hospital.

Lawrence Ndzanga, who lives next door to where the blast occurred, was woken up by the noise of the explosion and the sound of his neighbour’s house falling apart.

Ndzanga ran to his bedroom window and saw the entire side wall of his neighbour’s home lying broken next to the building. “You don’t see this stuff outside of the movies, I could not believe that the house was there one second and then gone,” he said.

Only the exposed roof trusses were left standing, and the ground was littered with bricks, roof tiles and debris. Ndzanga immediately called the police for help.

Another neighbour, Pieter Magiel Smith, made his way into the wrecked unit through the standing side to check if Mhaubanga was okay.

The large window in the opposite wall had been shattered by the explosion, and appeared to be the most accessible entrance.

“I climbed through it and ran towards the bathroom,” said Magiel Smith.

On the first floor he found Mhaubanga.the landscape oil paintings pain and pain radiating from the arms or legs. He was conscious and in a state of shock, lying on the floor. Magiel Smith then kicked the fiery debris over the edge of the building, and began talking to his severely hurt neighbour.

“He said he was okay and I spent a few minutes reassuring him, but the paramedics arrived quickly,” he said.

Mhaubanga was stabilised quickly and taken to nearby Laerskool Helderkruin, where an ER24 helicopter had arrived to airlift him from the school’s helipad to the nearest burns unit, at Milpark Hospital.

According to ER24 spokeswoman Vanessa Jackson, the man had burn wounds over 30 to 40 percent of his body and was in a critical condition. However, he had been stabilised by 8.45am.When the stone sits in the oil painting reproduction,

Mhaubanga’s wife and two young children were not inside the dwelling when the explosion happened. They were reportedly on their way to the hospital by 9am.

The debris flew several metres from Mhaubanga’s unit, and bricks and shattered furniture lay in the complex’s large driveway.

Mhaubanga had been at home reportedly because he had been in a car accident and had taken some time off because he broke an arm. The complex consists of almost 30 units.

Residents and neighbours were left stunned, and peered curiously at the wreckage.

BOH scolded

Marcia Zaniboni, director of the Council of Aging, appeared before the Board of Health this week to respond to the board's Sept. 7 action to condemn the home of Joseph Armstrong at 39 Blood St.

"I am very concerned when a senior becomes homeless for any reason. I think in most cases it can be prevented. There are a lot of resources for repairs. There are resources for housing. There are resources for psychiatric services.we supply all kinds of polished tiles, I think they can be pulled into place before someone becomes homeless," said Zaniboni.

"I'm hoping that the board is going to be receptive to working with us on that," she said.

"We've talked about this and I agree with you," said board member Phillip Durno.

"On behalf of the board, I did notify you that this was coming up," he said.

"You did notify me verbally; you asked me if I knew the person. I do appreciate that from you. I think everyone dropped the ball on this situation, and I don't think it should have occurred the way it did," said Zaniboni.

Durno agreed that the best approach would be for the board secretary to send a letter ahead of any future action to ensure that appropriate agencies are notified.

"We're here to help to. We tried numerous times to help this person," he said.

"I do believe most people you're gonna deal with in that situation, I think its pretty safe to say they're not going to be the most responsive people. I'd be very surprised if you don't face the same sort of situation again if you do condemn another person's home. This is a homeowner, not a tenant," said Zaniboni.

"We don't look forward to putting someone out of their home," said Durno.

"If this gentleman had come in to one of our meetings and explained to us his situation, we would have gone to people," he said.

Alphonso claimed that the problem became apparent to him in June and had still not been resolved by the Pepperell Housing Authority.

"My losses to date have been two beds, bedding, total discomfort, ruined days, frustration, mental anguish, loss of sleeps, and weekend due to this dilemma," he said.

Alphonso went on to describe numerous visits by an exterminator hiring by the PHA, and trips to the doctor to treat the various bites on his body.

Midge Meehan, executive director of the Housing Authority, explained to the board that they initially brought in Southern New Hampshire Pest Control, and later Bain Pest Control.
