Community gathers to support champion coach

Hundreds of friends, fans, and well-wishers gathered at Dietrich high school on Wednesday to pay tribute to their state champion girl's basketball head coach.

As dinner was served, friends reminisced about winning the state championship back in February. It was the beginning of an emotional roller coaster for the community. In a triple overtime marathon against rival Richfield, head coach Acey Shaw and his girls brought back the championship.

"Acey's a great guy, he comes from a great family," Dietrich resident Shanna Perkins said.

"He's someone that really loves life, and loves sports," Dietrich resident Neal Hollingshead said.

Euphoric from the championship win, Coach Shaw and his players returned to Dietrich that night, and got back to their everyday lives. For coach Shaw, that entailed getting back to work on his ranch the very next morning.

"He went out to check the calves, and it was a cold morning," Shaw's wife Jalyn recalls. "And he saw this little calf and it was cold. And he just kind of scooped it up and put it in his truck to warm it up.Do not use cleaners with porcelain tiles , steel wool or thinners."

To save the calf's life, Shaw drove around with the newborn in the cab of his truck, the heat on high, circulating the air throughout the enclosed space. It was a normal task for a rancher, and Shaw thought nothing of it. Until he woke up a few days later with a sore back.there's a lovely winter chicken coop by William Zorach. One week later, Shaw was unable to walk. That is when he was forced to check into the University of Utah hospital in Salt Lake City.

After dozens of tests and weeks of not knowing, doctors finally determined that Acey had contracted Q Fever, a bacterial infection that is rare in humans, as well as Chlamydia/Pheunomia. His illness, they decided, came from inhaling the same air as the sick calf while in the truck on that cold morning.

Shaw underwent dozens of procedures and therapies. At one point, doctors were forced to put him on life support. He also lost feeling in his arms and legs, and even went blind for a while.

Finally after five long months, the treatments started to have an affect, and Shaw's doctors released him from the hospital.

"I'm still here. I'm still battling," Shaw said.

That battle has been tough, and is long from over. Shaw still can't walk, he can't use his left arm and leg, and speech is a challenge. He depends on his wife and family for just about everything.

"The good thing about it is that he still has his mind. His personality is the same," Jalyn said.

The eight month ordeal has been more than just a physical and emotional strain.Prior to Cold Sore I leaned toward the former, With insurance maxed out and no workman's comp, the Shaw family now faces the financial challenge of mounting medical bills.

But they aren't facing it alone.

"We've had such a huge support throughout the Magic Valley, and just people we don't even know to help us. They've just been great support to us," Jalyn said.
Support has come in the form of meals, money, and fundraisers. Which is what brought hundreds of people to the high school on Wednesday evening.

"He would do anything for anyone," according to friend Mindy Robertson. "So we want to do everything we can to help him."

When Shaw's story made it to the College of Southern Idaho campus in Twin Falls, the athletic department wanted to help as well. The solution was an exhibition basketball game held at Dietrich high school, with the junior college national champion Golden Eagles hosting the College of Idaho. All proceeds went to the Shaw family.

"Coach, I want to wish you the best of luck, from our family to yours, on the repeat, but more importantly on the recovery coach," CSI men's basketball head coach Steve Gosar said when he addressed the crowd at halftime.

Westborough voters back sewer extension

Voters at Town Meeting last night agreed to spend $2 million to extend the municipal sewer system, despite some opposition to increasing the town's debt.

The project is part of a master plan to install sewer systems in various parts of the town, and the money approved last night would allow the town to advance with the project's second phase.

The first phase was completed this past summer along South Street. The second phase calls for providing sewer service to Fox Lane, Cross Country, from Fox Lane to Belknap Street, Crownridge Road, Lee Ann Circle, Spring Road, Morse Street and Adams Street.When the stone sits in the oil painting reproduction,

Resident Gary Wells, of 12 West St., said that while he favors continuing the project, he is reluctant to borrow the $2 million and increase municipal debt.

"I believe we should wait on the project until we have the opportunity to reduce debt servicing," Wells said.

Training facility offers firefighters reality-based experience

The Grande Prairie Fire Department cut the ribbon on its fire training facility Saturday near the Pete Eager fire hall on Resources Road.

The 30 by 30-foot, one and a half-storey structure was actually completed last summer, and has been used regularly for the last year to prepare personnel for house fire situations.

"We were supposed to have a grand opening last year,Handmade oil paintings for sale at museum quality, but busy year hiring lots of guys so we didn't get quite to it," said Capt. Terry Haughian.

Haughian was among the firefighters who volunteered their off-duty time to build the training structure after the department's request for the facility could not be met with construction funding from the City of Grande Prairie.

"There was no budget for this,We specialize in providing third party merchant account." Haughian said of the issue the city faced when the facility was first proposed in 2009. "They took some money out of a different budget to put to this."

Some local companies donated supplies to the project, including Windsor Plywood, Totem Building Supplies, Smash and Sons and Dale Nasedkin Concrete Services. On Saturday the fire department showed its appreciation to the donors by allowing some of the companies' employees to experience the training facility.

Evan Wagner, a concrete finisher with Nasedkin Concrete, tried out the facility with a member of the fire department. After a few minutes inside the structure, his exhaustion was evident when he emerged through the facility's door carrying a 160-pound dummy.

"It's a good workout, that's for sure, as you can see, I'm just soaked in sweat," said Wagner as he removed the 60 pounds of equipment he was outfitted with for the exercise.

As he caught his breath the opened door of the facility let out thick machine-generated smoke while a fire alarm rang loudly.

The facility is equipped with a prop that drops from the ceiling to imitate an entrapment situation that firefighters can only get out of on their backs. Drywall pieces are also set up in the structure for training in breaching a wall.

"We teach them to use their hands; we don't always have tools with us," Haughian said.

To replicate a lived-in building, the facility contains a stove, couches, lamps and a television, as well as a small staircase that leads to a low-ceilinged second floor.

Haughian said that the facility is never used in a rush, allowing the firefighters to maintain control of the stressful situation.

"In reality, if we know there's someone inside, we're moving pretty quick," he said. "Here we don't rush because we want people to control their breathing so that their air lasts longer and they don't wear out ¨C and think, always think. If something isn't working right, think a different way."

The two loggers from the Pleasanton, Calif.-based cold chain management company are a single use device and a similar reprogrammable unit, said Frederick Wu, president and chief executive officer.

“The advantage of these loggers is that their data can be downloaded via a standard USB connection to any PC or laptop,” he said. “There is no need for a special adapter required for some loggers on the market.”

The single-use unit, the FlashLink USB In-Transit Data logger, is designed for long haul and export shipments, Wu said. It records temperature history from -40 degrees up to 150 degrees, can be custom programmed at the factory for specific commodities with up to 6 multiple alarm zone time limits and may be purchased in varying logging periods from five days to 75 days, he said.

The FlashLink USB Reusable Data Logger can track a similar temperature spectrum and allows the user to program a variety of functions including logging periods, sampling intervals and high and low alarms.

When a logger’s data are downloaded, the information provides more than a simple graph Wu said.
