Installation to begin on solar energy collection field

Construction of the University's new West Windsor solar panel field is set to begin next week after months of planning and permit-seeking from local, county and state authorities. The project's completion has been scheduled for summer 2012.

The 5.3-megawatt solar field collector will occupy 27 acres of University-owned land in West Windsor Township, bordered by the Dinky train line, the Delaware & Raritan Canal, Washington Road and Route 1.

The field will generate 8 million kilowatt-hours of energy per year and could eventually reduce the University's carbon dioxide emissions by 3,090 metric tons every year. This reduction will contribute to the University's 2008 Sustainability Plan, which aims to bring its carbon dioxide emissions down to 1990 levels by 2020.

If successful,For the last five years Hemroids , the project will generate enough energy to provide 5.5 percent of the total electricity used by the campus annually and reduce the University's yearly electricity costs by about 8.0 percent. The solar array is expected to last for about 30 years.

To capture sunlight, 16,500 photovoltaic panels will be installed on the field. While a long underground cable that will carry power to the campus will be placed beneath the canal and Lake Carnegie.

Of the installed panels, 80 percent will be new "SunPower T0 Trackers," which use a GPS device to follow the sun throughout the day and thus maximize energy absorption. The remaining 20 percent will be fixed in place. The solar panel system will not always be running at full power: The solar panels may only gather 5 to 10 percent of their normal energy load in the early hours of the morning and will produce no power at night, when it is dark.

Faculty and students will be able to use the continuous stream of data collected from the solar array for research purposes.

Though the prospect of using solar panels to generate energy for the University has long been on the minds of members of the facilities department, the project became financially viable in 2010 through a federal grant and various incentives offered under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, as well as the revenue-generating potential of New Jersey's Solar Renewable Energy Certificate Program.

"It's a technology that we've been watching in some of these engineering projects for 20 years," Princeton Energy Plant Manager Ted Borer said. The University will generate power from the field and pay for its lease with a combination of the grant, avoided energy costs from its own power generation and the sale of Solar Renewable Energy Certificates to utility groups within New Jersey.

SRECs are tax incentives that represent a facility's production of solar-generated energy. The New Jersey government issues one SREC for every megawatt-hour of energy produced by a facility's solar-powered system, and the facility that receives the SREC can then sell this certificate at market price to utilities in the state that don't have the capacity to generate solar power themselves.

The concern about how to store Austin's snow piles under Cedar River Watershed District rules arose one more time Tuesday morning.

But with the board voting to pass the rules next Wednesday, members took one more look to see if they should be a little more accommodating to the city's needs. There's still concern the rule would eliminate one storage site at Marcusen Park, which would cause the city to spend several hundred thousand dollars more in snow storage and transportation costs.

The board plans to present several other options at a public hearing 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 20 one hour before its regular meeting.

Though salt chloride from the snow piles is one concern, the trash and other debris from residents' yards is another, according to Mike Jones, CRWD board president. Regardless of what happens, a majority of the board thinks the current best management practices (BMPs) the city has in place need to be moved further back.

"We can always come back and re-address the rules, or restrict them or change them," CRWD Board President Mike Jones.

The city currently has some earthen berms with vegetation and rock surrounding them, which trap sediment from getting into the river at Marcusen Park. The designer, Jeffery Roberts of Grand Rapids, chose three different shades of taupe, each with a different sheen. Not only does the Engle family have striped walls in their foyer, but also up the stairwell.

There are also stripes adorning the walls to the lower level. "Same idea," Engle said. "When you take the same paint color and play with different sheens, it's like ¡®shadow striping'."

Early on the morning of Oct. 12, an overloaded extension cord sparked a fire that quickly spread through a two-story home on Jeanne Street in Aragona Village.

The fire raged for about a half hour, claiming the life of a 73-year-old woman and displacing 10 people. A board of fire safety professionals reviewed more than 150 nominations for the National Firemark Award for Heroism and selected Scott the winner. She'll be recognized at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday in a ceremony at Town Center's Fountain Plaza.

Training facility offers firefighters reality-based experience

The Grande Prairie Fire Department cut the ribbon on its fire training facility Saturday near the Pete Eager fire hall on Resources Road.

The 30 by 30-foot, one and a half-storey structure was actually completed last summer, and has been used regularly for the last year to prepare personnel for house fire situations.

"We were supposed to have a grand opening last year,Handmade oil paintings for sale at museum quality, but busy year hiring lots of guys so we didn't get quite to it," said Capt. Terry Haughian.

Haughian was among the firefighters who volunteered their off-duty time to build the training structure after the department's request for the facility could not be met with construction funding from the City of Grande Prairie.

"There was no budget for this,We specialize in providing third party merchant account." Haughian said of the issue the city faced when the facility was first proposed in 2009. "They took some money out of a different budget to put to this."

Some local companies donated supplies to the project, including Windsor Plywood, Totem Building Supplies, Smash and Sons and Dale Nasedkin Concrete Services. On Saturday the fire department showed its appreciation to the donors by allowing some of the companies' employees to experience the training facility.

Evan Wagner, a concrete finisher with Nasedkin Concrete, tried out the facility with a member of the fire department. After a few minutes inside the structure, his exhaustion was evident when he emerged through the facility's door carrying a 160-pound dummy.

"It's a good workout, that's for sure, as you can see, I'm just soaked in sweat," said Wagner as he removed the 60 pounds of equipment he was outfitted with for the exercise.

As he caught his breath the opened door of the facility let out thick machine-generated smoke while a fire alarm rang loudly.

The facility is equipped with a prop that drops from the ceiling to imitate an entrapment situation that firefighters can only get out of on their backs. Drywall pieces are also set up in the structure for training in breaching a wall.

"We teach them to use their hands; we don't always have tools with us," Haughian said.

To replicate a lived-in building, the facility contains a stove, couches, lamps and a television, as well as a small staircase that leads to a low-ceilinged second floor.

Haughian said that the facility is never used in a rush, allowing the firefighters to maintain control of the stressful situation.

"In reality, if we know there's someone inside, we're moving pretty quick," he said. "Here we don't rush because we want people to control their breathing so that their air lasts longer and they don't wear out ¨C and think, always think. If something isn't working right, think a different way."
