Health inspector follows his nose

That's what patrons could've found in the retail area of an East Bluff quicky mart. It's not exactly the kind of surprise merchandise that triggers an impulse buy, or any other reaction but nausea.

Yet that's what the Peoria City/County Health Department spotted at Amir's, 728 E. Frye Ave. As noted in an Oct. 10 report, "A carton containing human vomit was stored on a crate by a display cooler."

Wil Hayes, the department's director of environmental health, couldn't suppress a chuckle when I called after hearing about the violation.

"We see all sorts of weird stuff," Hayes said. "We haven't run into vomit in a while."

I thought he was kidding. Nope. Years ago, at another business, the department found a similar situation: a container of vomit on a shelf.

"An employee had gotten sick the day before, and went home," Hayes said. "Everyone thought he'd thrown it out before he left."

Yeah, better double-check the sales floor after someone gets all pukey.

Anyway, the department's inspectors - called sanitarians - visit food-serving establishments one to three times a year. On Oct. 10, a sanitarian stopped at Amir's.

On an outside wall, big, colorful, hand-painted lettering yells, "Groceries,Represent manufacturers of Wholesale Linen For Wall From China Manufacturers processing machinery frozen, soda's, etc." Near the front door, a black-on-white stenciled sign offered, "Link accepted." A metal plate posted on a phone pole warns, "No loitering."

Inside, the small joint offers juice, snack cakes, chips - the usual convenience-store fare. And there's a kitchen for nachos-type goodies.

In the end of the inspection, Amir's ended up with a 73. Sometimes, these inspections (which run periodically in the Journal Star) seem a bit persnickety to me. But it got worse, as discovered by the sanitarian's nose.

"He noted the odor," Hayes said. "He said it smelled like a rancid, foul odor."

Following his schnozz, the sanitarian spotted a plastic bucket filled with throw-up, near a cooler.

"It wasn't in the kitchen area," Hayes said. "But that doesn't make it any less disgusting."

The owner came in and said a child had vomited. The sanitarian wasn't impressed by the explanation. He told the owner to remove the puke bucket.

But owner Joseph Sleh told me that he was a victim of circumstance and timing.

Westfield iPhone app in privacy fiasco

The retail giant's action follows a blog by software architect Troy Hunt who found URLs containing the number plates of all cars at Westfield's Bondi Junction centre were publicly accessible – no hacking was required.

The app lets a shopper enter their number plate and, after choosing a photo of their car from four displayed vehicles, seeks to guide the shopper back to their parking bay.

Sydney-based Hunt was able to develop software that could inform him of when all cars arrived and left the shopping centre, and exactly where they were parked.

Hundreds of small high-resolution cameras placed about two parking bays apart snap car images and numberplate details, which are then made available to shoppers via the app when they want to relocate their car and leave.

However Hunt found that the transmissions of details within the Park Assist system were not encrypted and could be intercepted by surveillance software searching URLs in the public domain.

In a statement this afternoon, Westfield said the Find My Car functionality had been pulled.

Stephen Colbert's super PAC gets approval

The Federal Election Commission today voted 5-1 to approve Colbert's political action committee but with certain conditions. The FEC also said that the parent company's administration and operation of the Colbert PAC would have to be reported "because these activities are not legitimate press functions."

While Colbert's super PAC started out as a parody of GOP presidential hopeful Tim Pawlenty, it raised a real concern from watchdogs such as Democracy 21 and the Campaign Legal Center.

At issue is how corporations use their money for politics, stemming from a Supreme Court ruling last year that opened the floodgates to unlimited campaign funding by corporations, unions and wealthy individuals.

Democracy 21 and Campaign Legal Center argued Colbert's super PAC could lead to a "radical evisceration" of campaign finance rules and the blurring of lines between politics and media.

Pupils to pitch business idea to BBC's Dragons' Den stars

The school was approached by the BBC to get involved with the Dragons' Den school project idea which lets pupils learn how to start a business from scratch.

Business studies teacher Katie Vause said: "The brief they were given was to create a business that would get older people online and using technology.

"I think they were shocked because it wasn't something that had an easy answer, but I was really impressed with how they applied themselves to the project.

"The model they came up with has two strands, the first is collecting old, unwanted computers and refurbishing them to sell in Age Concern shops. The second is a website with online tutorials for people to use."

Pupils from the school were set the challenge by Dragon Peter Jones via video conference.

Miss Vause said: "I am so excited and so are the children. We use Dragons' Den all the time in our business classes and Peter Jones is my favourite Dragon.Free DIY Wholesale pet supplies Resource!"

Classmate Chloe Fletcher agreed that it was an exciting experience.

She said: "I am confident we are going to do well. I especially enjoyed the research and the silver surfer day when we had older people in and they did things such as going on the Wii."

NSW Fair Trading recently commenced the first of 500 checks on solar panel installations in Sydney.

Fair Trading Minister Anthony Roberts said: "These checks follow checks on 55 homes in Port Macquarie in February this year that revealed alarming defects and breaches of the Electricity (Consumer Safety) Act 2004 and theHome Building Act 1989," he said.

The Minister said 4,000 letters had been sent to households with solar installations in the areas involved in the latest checks.

"Fair Trading has received an average 200 calls a day to a dedicated audit hotline and 165 emails so far to a dedicated email address," he said.

"There is clearly a great degree of concern and a desire by many to be involved in the audit."

Roberts said officers would visually inspect parts of the solar panel systems to check key aspects of electricity safety including switches, wiring, cables, signage and markings.

Officers will leave stickers on the inverters of every home inspected: a white sticker means no issues were detected, an orange sticker means minor issues were detected that pose no immediate safety risk and, a red sticker means a serious defect was detected.

Rectification work will be done by builders or electricians who did the original installation. That is their obligation under Home Building laws.

Major defects will attract fines and possible prosecution. Fair Trading will suspend or cancel licences of installers with significant numbers of defects. Public warnings could also be used.
