Three key executives at furniture and bedding supplier Hickory Springs have been named to new positions.

Bobby Bush has been named senior vice president of foam and environmental technology. He will be responsible for development and advancement of new foam products and technologies, and environmental compliance at all company locations.

Bush has been with the company since 1976 and most recently was vice president of foam and environmental technology. Previously, he held the positions of Conover area sales manager, West Coast manager.

Buster Mann has been promoted to senior vice president of foam operations and will be responsible for Hickory Springs' foam facilities nationwide. Mann will synchronize operational efficiencies for all six of the company's foam manufacturing plants and coordinate best practices for its 25 foam facilities, the company said.

He has been with the company since 1975. Northrop GaAs solar panels assist NASA spacecraft around Mercury

The solar array on NASA's MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) spacecraft features advanced triple-junction GaAs solar cells and an electrical harness developed and qualified for this mission by Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems.

Training facility offers firefighters reality-based experience

The Grande Prairie Fire Department cut the ribbon on its fire training facility Saturday near the Pete Eager fire hall on Resources Road.

The 30 by 30-foot, one and a half-storey structure was actually completed last summer, and has been used regularly for the last year to prepare personnel for house fire situations.

"We were supposed to have a grand opening last year,Handmade oil paintings for sale at museum quality, but busy year hiring lots of guys so we didn't get quite to it," said Capt. Terry Haughian.

Haughian was among the firefighters who volunteered their off-duty time to build the training structure after the department's request for the facility could not be met with construction funding from the City of Grande Prairie.

"There was no budget for this,We specialize in providing third party merchant account." Haughian said of the issue the city faced when the facility was first proposed in 2009. "They took some money out of a different budget to put to this."

Some local companies donated supplies to the project, including Windsor Plywood, Totem Building Supplies, Smash and Sons and Dale Nasedkin Concrete Services. On Saturday the fire department showed its appreciation to the donors by allowing some of the companies' employees to experience the training facility.

Evan Wagner, a concrete finisher with Nasedkin Concrete, tried out the facility with a member of the fire department. After a few minutes inside the structure, his exhaustion was evident when he emerged through the facility's door carrying a 160-pound dummy.

"It's a good workout, that's for sure, as you can see, I'm just soaked in sweat," said Wagner as he removed the 60 pounds of equipment he was outfitted with for the exercise.

As he caught his breath the opened door of the facility let out thick machine-generated smoke while a fire alarm rang loudly.

The facility is equipped with a prop that drops from the ceiling to imitate an entrapment situation that firefighters can only get out of on their backs. Drywall pieces are also set up in the structure for training in breaching a wall.

"We teach them to use their hands; we don't always have tools with us," Haughian said.

To replicate a lived-in building, the facility contains a stove, couches, lamps and a television, as well as a small staircase that leads to a low-ceilinged second floor.

Haughian said that the facility is never used in a rush, allowing the firefighters to maintain control of the stressful situation.

"In reality, if we know there's someone inside, we're moving pretty quick," he said. "Here we don't rush because we want people to control their breathing so that their air lasts longer and they don't wear out ¨C and think, always think. If something isn't working right, think a different way."

NSW Fair Trading recently commenced the first of 500 checks on solar panel installations in Sydney.

Fair Trading Minister Anthony Roberts said: "These checks follow checks on 55 homes in Port Macquarie in February this year that revealed alarming defects and breaches of the Electricity (Consumer Safety) Act 2004 and theHome Building Act 1989," he said.

The Minister said 4,000 letters had been sent to households with solar installations in the areas involved in the latest checks.

"Fair Trading has received an average 200 calls a day to a dedicated audit hotline and 165 emails so far to a dedicated email address," he said.

"There is clearly a great degree of concern and a desire by many to be involved in the audit."

Roberts said officers would visually inspect parts of the solar panel systems to check key aspects of electricity safety including switches, wiring, cables, signage and markings.

Officers will leave stickers on the inverters of every home inspected: a white sticker means no issues were detected, an orange sticker means minor issues were detected that pose no immediate safety risk and, a red sticker means a serious defect was detected.

Rectification work will be done by builders or electricians who did the original installation. That is their obligation under Home Building laws.

Major defects will attract fines and possible prosecution. Fair Trading will suspend or cancel licences of installers with significant numbers of defects. Public warnings could also be used.

No one can accuse the members of Forest Lake Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa of letting grass grow under their feet.

Within hours of the April 27 tornado, more than 100 survivors living nearby came to the church for help. A few church members did the best they could to minister amid the destruction. That's when the Alabama congregation sprang into action.

Only two days after the storm, Forest Lake Baptist had set up an extensive ministry center in its basement fellowship hall. For weeks, the church has been providing canned food, water, hot meals, baby supplies, clothing, bedding, cleaning supplies,What are the top Hemroids treatments? books and some furniture and appliances. It has even provided pet food for animal shelters.

What makes Forest Lake's quick response so amazing is that its facilities, located in the heart of one of the tornado's path, suffered more than $1.5 million in damages.

But "the Lord has graciously provided," church member Terri Hibbard said.

Fellow member and ministry center volunteer Jan Anders agreed. "There is nothing we have needed that hasn't walked through the doors when we needed it."

In fact, God has provided in such an overwhelming way that Forest Lake has given goods to other churches and organizations.

A team of volunteers from Mississippi showed up the first week and provided 1,500 hot dog meals out of a trailer. Volunteers from Florida distributed barbecue sandwiches in the church's parking lot.

World Vision, Samaritan's Purse and The Salvation Army all have donated items to the ministry center.

"A tractor-trailer rig loaded with relief items just rolled onto the church's parking lot a few days ago. The driver came inside and said we could have everything on his truck."

"We're trying to stock up for the long haul," Payne said. "We know there will be needs for months to come."

He said the church initially ministered to storm survivors, rescue workers, police and National Guard troops but now is reaching out to construction workers.

God also has provided volunteers. More than 200 church members have participated in Forest Lake's disaster relief ministry.

"Our church has really come together during this time," member Susan Kincaid said.

In addition to offering relief items, members have listened to and prayed with those needing help. A table in the center of the fellowship hall stacked with Bibles bears a sign that reads, "Take one."

Payne is quick to credit the response of University of Alabama students.

"University students have risen to the occasion," he said. "Hundreds have come by the church offering their help."

Church member Earline Thornton, who is in her 70s, has been an inspiration for all volunteers. Even though Thornton lost her home to the tornado,Handmade oil paintings for sale at museum quality, she shows up every day to help in the ministry center.

Billy Gray, interim director of missions for the Tuscaloosa Baptist Association, said, "When you walk into Forest Lake's ministry center, you think you are in a store. One half looks like a department store, and the other half looks like a grocery story. They are so organized."

The first Sundays after the storm, Forest Lake held worship in the Baptist Campus Ministries chapel on the University of Alabama campus. For the past several Sundays, worship has been held in the church's damaged sanctuary.
