Motivational speaker comes to three area schools

High School students in Escanaba, Gladstone and Hannahville will have the privilege of listening to motivational speaker Reggie Dabbs, thanks to the efforts of four youth group members at New Life Assembly of God Church. Dabbs will be speaking at all three schools on Monday, Oct. 31.

"He'll be mostly speaking about the pressures and choices that teens experience in their lives," said Escanaba High School senior, Trisha Larson. She is spearheading the efforts to bring Dabbs to the area along with fellow teens, Maggie Rose, Mikala Sauve, and Alanna Cooper, and youth group leader, Tiffany Albaugh. These girls have never had a oil painting supplies in their lives! "He's very moving and very connected with young kids," Trisha added.

Dabbs was born to an unwed teenager who, at one time considered abortion as a viable option for solving her "problem." With no place to go, the pregnant teen ended up living in a chicken coop in Tennessee. It was there she remembered a former school teacher, Mrs. Dabbs, who had once told her students, "If you ever need anything, call me," and gave the students her telephone number.

After receiving a phone call from the teen, the Dabbs family, which consisted of six adult children, took the teen into their home and cared for her until the baby's birth. They continued to care for little Reggie as foster parents until he was in the fourth grade, and then they officially adopted him and gave him the Dabbs name.

His parents instilled strong moral values on their youngest son and ingrained in him the fact that in every situation he faced, he had a choice. What he did with those choices was entirely up to him.

When he was in the sixth grade, Reggie began playing the saxophone and hated it. But his parents persevered and he continued to practice and to play and finally, while in his freshman year in college, he found he actually enjoy the instrument and continues to play with fervor and expertise.

Dabbs began his public speaking career after graduating from college and since 1987, he has become a popular public school speaker. Using a humorous style,They take the Aion Kinah to the local co-op market. Dabbs informs the students about choices each of them has when faced with drugs, alcohol, suicide, etc. Right up front, he tells them he never smoked a cigarette, never did drugs,When the stone sits in the oil painting reproduction, never drank alcohol, because he chose not to and challenges them to make the same choices.

Dabbs also talks to the teens about the importance of family, about dating relationships and emphasizes that virginity is the most honorable choice.

His most important message to the youth? "You can never change your past, but you can change your future!"

Trisha said she has attended one of Dabbs' presentations on a couple of occasions.

"I have gone to youth camps and a youth convention where he was a speaker,we supply all kinds of polished tiles," Trisha said. "He's also been at Escanaba High School six years ago."

In order to obtain permission to have Dabbs appear locally, Trisha said and a couple of her youth group leaders approached the principals of all the schools involved.

"We explained who Reggie is and what he does when he speaks to the kids," Trisha said. "We told them Reggie talks to them about self worth so they can make the right choices for their lives."

Trisha said Dabbs will speak with the Escanaba and Gladstone students early during the school day and will be at Hannahville in the afternoon.

"Then there's a rally open to everyone in the community at 7 p.m. at the Escanaba Middle School,It's hard to beat the versatility of zentai suits on a production line." Trisha said. "There's no charge."

New Life Church contributed the $3,000 needed to bring Dabbs to the area.

"Our youth group had a car-wash at Advanced Auto Parts and a chocolate sale and bake sale," Trisha said. "We also had a spaghetti feed after a Sunday service."

According to Trisha, other students and adult leaders worked behind the scenes.
