Wounded 75th Ranger to Receive Medal Of Honor

An Army Ranger who lost his right hand and suffered shrapnel wounds after throwing an armed grenade away from his fellow Soldiers will be the second living Medal of Honor Recipient from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

On July 12th, President Barack Obama will award Sgt. 1st Class Leroy Arthur Petry, with the Medal of Honor for conspicuous gallantry. Petry will receive the Medal of Honor for his courageous actions during combat operations against an armed enemy in Paktya, Afghanistan, May 26, 2008.

Petry now serves as part of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 75th Ranger Regiment at Fort Benning, Ga.

"It's very humbling to know that the guys thought that much of me and my actions that day, to nominate me for that," said Petry, on learning he had been nominated for the medal.

At the time of his actions in Afghanistan, Petry was assigned to Company A, 2nd Bn., 75th Ranger Regiment at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash. Petry's actions came as part of a rare daylight raid to capture a high-value target.

On the day of the actions that would earn Petry the Medal of Honor, he was to locate himself with the platoon headquarters in the target building once it was secured. Once there, he was to serve as the senior noncommissioned officer at the site for the remainder of the operation.

Recognizing one of the assault squads needed assistance clearing their assigned building, Petry relayed to the platoon leader that he was moving to that squad to provide additional supervision and guidance during the clearance of the building.

Once the residential portion of the building had been cleared, Petry took a fellow member of the assault squad, Pvt. 1st Class Lucas Robinson, to clear the outer courtyard. Petry knew that area had not been cleared during the initial clearance.uy sculpture direct from us at low prices

Petry and Robinson, both Rangers, moved into an area of the compound that contained at least three enemy fighters who were prepared to engage friendly forces from opposite ends of the outer courtyard.

The two Soldiers entered the courtyard. To their front was an opening followed by a chicken coop. As the two crossed the open area, an enemy insurgent fired on them. Petry was wounded by one round, which went through both of his legs. Robinson was also hit in his side plate by a separate round.

While wounded and under enemy fire, Petry led Robinson to the cover of the chicken coop. The enemy continued to deliver fire at the two Soldiers.

As the senior Soldier, Petry assessed the situation and reported that contact was made and that there were two wounded Rangers in the courtyard of the primary target building.

Upon hearing the report of two wounded Rangers, Sgt. Daniel Higgins,Free DIY Wholesale pet supplies Resource! a team leader, moved to the outer courtyard. As Higgins was moving to Petry and Robinson's position, Petry threw a thermobaric grenade in the vicinity of the enemy position.

Shortly after that grenade exploded -- which created a lull in the enemy fire -- Higgins arrived at the chicken coop and assessed the wounds of the two Soldiers.

While Higgins evaluated their wounds, an insurgent threw a grenade over the chicken coop at the three Rangers. The Leading zentai suits Distributor to Independent Pet Retailers. The grenade landed about 10 meters from the three Rangers, knocked them to the ground, and wounded Higgins and Robinson. Shortly after the grenade exploded, Staff Sgt. James Roberts and Spc. Christopher Gathercole entered the courtyard, and moved toward the chicken coop.

With three Soldiers taking cover in the chicken coop, an enemy fighter threw another grenade at them. This time, the grenade landed just a few feet from Higgins and Robinson.

Recognizing the threat that the enemy grenade posed to his fellow Rangers, Petry -- despite his own wounds and with complete disregard for his personal safety -- consciously and deliberately risked his life to move to and secure the live enemy grenade and consciously throw the grenade away from his fellow Rangers, according to battlefield reports.

As Petry released the grenade in the direction of the enemy, preventing the serious injury or death of Higgins and Robinson, it detonated and catastrophically amputated his right hand.

With a clear mind, Petry assessed his wound and placed a tourniquet on his right arm. Once this was complete, he reported that he was still in contact with the enemy and that he had been wounded again.

After the blast that amputated Petry's hand, Roberts began to engage the enemy behind the chicken coop with small arms fire and a grenade. His actions suppressed the insurgents behind the chicken coop. Shortly after, another enemy on the east end of the courtyard began firing, fatally wounding Gathercole. In addition to hydraulics fittings and Aion Kinah,

Higgins and Robinson returned fire and killed the enemy.

Moments later, Sgt. 1st Class Jerod Staidle, the platoon sergeant, and Spc. Gary Depriest, the platoon medic, arrived in the outer courtyard. After directing Depriest to treat Gathercole, Staidle moved to Petry' s position. Staidle and Higgins then assisted Petry as he moved to the casualty collection point.

Higgins later wrote in a statement, "if not for Staff Sergeant Petry's actions, we would have been seriously wounded or killed."

Petry is the ninth servicemember to have been named a recipient of the Medal of Honor for actions in Afghanistan and Iraq. Of prior recipients, all but Petry and Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta were awarded the honor posthumously.

Included among those recipients are Spc. Ross A. McGinnis, Sgt. 1st Class Paul R. Smith, Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael A. Monsoor, and Marine Corps Cpl. Jason L. Dunham, all for actions in Iraq. Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta,Complete Your honeycomb panels Magazine Collection for Less! Staff Sgt. Robert Miller, Sgt. 1st Class Jared C. Monti and Navy Lt. Michael P. Murphy were awarded the Medal of Honor for actions in Afghanistan.

Petry currently serves as a liaison officer for the United States Special Operations Command Care Coalition-Northwest Region, and provides oversight to wounded warriors, ill and injured servicemembers and their families.

He enlisted in the United States Army from his hometown of Santa Fe, N.M. in September 1999. After completion of One Station Unit Training, the Basic Airborne Course and the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program -- all at Fort Benning, Ga. -- Petry was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. Petry has served as a grenadier, squad automatic rifleman, fire team leader, squad leader, operations sergeant, and weapons squad leader.

He has deployed eight times in support of the War on Terror with two tours to Iraq and six tours to Afghanistan.

Petry and his wife Ashley have four children, Brittany, Austin, Reagan and Landon.

Nuclear's downfall props up renewables

It's also a relevant question in Ontario, which isn't nearly as important to the solar market as Germany, but has a big impact in Canada. Ontario is holding a provincial election this fall and opposition leader Tim Hudak is already attacking Premier Dalton McGuinty's renewable-energy plan that is pushing home energy costs much higher.

But now Mr. Hudak is in a corner. If he cuts back on renewables funding, it's pretty hard to argue for nuclear at a time when Germany is ending its production. The Ontario Liberals have already seized on this and painted the picture of what a return to coal-fired power plants would look like.

In the big picture, it's promising for renewable sources like solar and wind.

Still,Polycore zentai are manufactured as a single sheet, Mr. Merer is wary of putting too much hope into renewables right now, especially solar. German subsidies have been declining and investors have been expecting a glut of solar module output this year and beyond, he notes. Plus, renewable sources have much more intermittent power, so thermal sources like coal and gas will probably fill the hole in Germany's power production.

Moreover, natural gas has been getting a lot of attention of late. Although huge new discoveries sent prices plummeting over the past few years, there is now the potential of exporting liquified natural gas to other nations where prices are higher. And long-term, if oil prices skyrocket, natural gas could become the more convenient energy source.

IPad Finds a Place on Deck

Software to help sailors navigate their yachts have made computer tablets, particularly the iPad from Apple, a valued piece of equipment on deck.

The apps, most of them available only for the iPad, work to ease planning and can be used to control a broad range of functions, including security systems and onboard environment.

"We have already installed iPads onboard many superyachts as an add-on to dedicated control panels," said Arjan Kleinveld, managing director of Van Berge Henegouwen Installaties, which customizes superyachts.

He added that many of his customers requested the iPad for their new yachts as well.

In October, two marine apps for the iPad were co-winners of the most innovative product award at the Marine Equipment Trade Show in Amsterdam.

One, the SiMON2 ship alarm monitoring app from Palladium Technologies, uses Wi-Fi to interface with Palladium-made controllers that monitor the ship's engines, generators, tanks, batteries, electric panels and other critical equipment, and present monitoring data on the iPad in rich graphics.

The other, the Navionics Mediterranean HD navigation system, offers high-resolution graphics of detailed marine and lake charts with a satellite imagery overlay, allowing users to search for marinas, set routes and markers and create a virtual travelog of a trip, which they can share by e-mail or through Facebook,Polycore zentai are manufactured as a single sheet, or the Navionics social network.

The two iPad-compatible apps were praised at the 2010 Amsterdam show for making control and navigation of any yacht "significantly easier than it has ever been before."

While marine apps for the iPad are dominating the market, some companies are also starting to offer similar apps for other tablets and operating systems.

WeatherBug, a company that monitors and disseminates global weather information, has recently added a mobile app compatible with the Android 3.0 operating system from Google, known as Honeycomb, which is used on the Motorola Xoom. The company also has an app for the iPad.

Digital Yacht, a marine electronics specialist, is working on an Android app similar to its AIS app for the iPad, which costs 350, or $570, plus value added tax. The app is an internationally recognized system that sends details of a boat's identity and position to other boats equipped with AIS, which stands for automatic identification system.

"This should come out shortly, but our next generation of development is geared towards putting data into any browser via our BoatraNet onboard server," said Nick Heyes, managing director of Digital Yacht. Anything with a browser, he said, "will be able to view charts and data, which makes tablets even more appealing for use onboard."

For now, developers are focusing on the iPad. Many of the new apps provide a bridge between traditional marine electronics and the latest generation of consumer products. For example, iNavX by Navionics, which costs $49.99, can support a real time GPS overlay to turn the iPad into a fully-functional electronic chart plotter. The Marine Tides Planner ($5.99) by Tucabo gives access to tide information in 5,000 locations around the world.

"We picked the Apple iPad because of the market penetration that Apple has achieved," said Michael Blake, president of Palladium Technologies. "In addition, we are able to create very user-pleasing graphics based upon the development tools available for the iPad."

The company's SiMON system, which the app syncs with, monitors the critical functions and equipment on a yacht. It can be used on several iPads concurrently to display various data simultaneously, and can be used to control the onboard lighting and audio visual and entertainment systems as well as view security cameras. Mr. Blake said the app was very secure.

"And, since technology moves fast and yacht owners always want to have the latest and greatest technology onboard their yachts, the iPad 2 is the only edition asked for since its release," said Mr. Kleinveld, of Van Berge Henegouwen Installaties. "In fact, clients that use the first generation iPads now massively request to replace these with the latest edition iPad 2."

Lurssen Yachts, a German shipbuilding company that specializes in luxury yachts, has also installed iPads on several yachts, primarily for controlling the onboard environment, though a few use it to monitor the yacht's systems.

Michael Breman, sales director at Lurssen Yachts, noted that the iPad could also be used for security — for tracking people and as an alarm system, for example — and while the company has not yet installed any for this purpose, he said he expected to do so in the future.

The use of tablets can make life on board much easier, especially when it comes to navigation. Christine Kling, an author of suspense novels and a keen sailor, says she uses her iPad because it puts a lot more information at her fingertips.

"I used to have to go into the cockpit to see the instruments there, and I don't have to anymore," she said. "I also used to have to rely on outdated guidebooks."

"If we are coastal cruising with access to 3G," she added, referring to high-speed third-generation mobile networks, "I can also check the radar to see if there are any thunderstorms in the area through weather apps such as WeatherBug or WunderMap, both free. And I love how WeatherBug even has a little arrow in the corner of the screen so you can set the radar in motion and check in what direction the clouds are moving."

Of course, there are other benefits to the iPad, those known to yachtsmen and nonsailors alike.

"On a two-handed boat, you spend lots of your off-watch time below in the bunk catching up on your rest, and I always take my iPad into my bunk with me," Ms. King said. "I can read books on the iPad or listen to music, and then when I want to see how we're doing, I only need to swipe the screen and I can check in with iNavX to see the boat's position, course and speed."

DeltaTRAK unveils loggers with USB data downloading

DeltaTRAK Inc. has developed two new data loggers that make use of standard USB connections to retrieve a shipment’s cold chain history.
DeltaTRAK unveils new loggers with USB data downloading

The two loggers from the Pleasanton, Calif.-based cold chain management company are a single use device and a similar reprogrammable unit, said Frederick Wu, president and chief executive officer.

“The advantage of these loggers is that their data can be downloaded via a standard USB connection to any PC or laptop,” he said. “There is no need for a special adapter required for some loggers on the market.”

The single-use unit, the FlashLink USB In-Transit Data logger, is designed for long haul and export shipments, Wu said. It records temperature history from -40 degrees up to 150 degrees, can be custom programmed at the factory for specific commodities with up to 6 multiple alarm zone time limits and may be purchased in varying logging periods from five days to 75 days, he said.

The FlashLink USB Reusable Data Logger can track a similar temperature spectrum and allows the user to program a variety of functions including logging periods, sampling intervals and high and low alarms.

When a logger’s data are downloaded, the information provides more than a simple graph Wu said.

“By using the DeltaTRAK software that is available from our website at no cost, the user will find analytical data that can help determine whether any temperature shifts might affect shelf life,” he said. “Our goal is to provide our customers with the most accurate temperature data monitoring tools possible that can be very quickly and easily downloaded for analysis.”

Apple patent shows iPad tablet with two USB ports

Apple’s market dominating tablets the iPad and iPad 2 were originally designed to boast two USB 2.0 ports, an unused patent filed buy the Cupertino company has revealed.

The patent, which covers both Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity options, also granted Apple coverage to incorporate a second, landscape docking connection, a feature that would allow users to port their Apple tablets on landscape specific docks for improved movie viewing possibilities.

With a USB port topping many iPad owners additional features wish lists, Apple’s decision not to push forward with a patent that it received prior to the second-generation model’s arrival will be disappointing to many.

Tipped as a possible for the iPad 2, the patent which depicts an iPad with a second, horizontal docking port, dubbed simply “portable display device,” accredits Apple CEO Steve Jobs, chief designer Jonathan Ive and 13 other Apple personal as the systems inventors.

Android Embraces Arduino; DIYers of the World Rejoice

Android fans rejoice! The new Android 3.1 Ice Cream Sandwich brings the promise of better USB support to connect to digital cameras and printers. But Android’s discovery of new USB peripherals does not end there, because Google is opening up to Arduino-based accessories with their own official Android Open Accessory Development Kit.

While you can’t exactly use a good ol’ homebrewed Arduino setup with it, Google will be providing the USB micro-controller board, Android Demo Shield, and the library software needed to run the board. You’ll still need a Windows, Mac, or Linux box to get the thing running, but after that you can use your handy Android device, any version between 2.3.4 and 3.1, to run it.

Accessories with the Accessory Development Kit (ADK) board can be run from your Android device using the DemoKit Android application. The ADK board receives commands such as lighting up the board's LEDs while it sends data such as joystick movement and temperature readings back to your devices. So far Android’s Arduino kit only supports USB connectivity but they hope to have connections by bluetooth in the future.

Android’s previous USB protocol only supported accessories that provided 500mA at 5V for charging power. The Android Open Accessory support overcomes the limitation allowing users to build their own accessories to be used with the device.

Galaxy poll finds Queenslanders fed up with state and federal governments wasting money

QUEENSLANDERS have lost faith in the ability of the state and federal governments to spend money wisely.

A Galaxy Poll conducted exclusively for The Courier-Mail shows 70 per cent of Queenslanders believe governments are wasting money.

But the politicians say they have got it wrong.

The Courier-Mail's Waste Watchers campaign will keep an eye on how governments are spending taxpayer money.

It comes after both federal and state governments have been dogged by a series of botched or complaint-riddled programs, ranging from the deadly $2.45 billion home insulation scheme at the federal level and the health payroll fiasco at the state level.

Others include the dumped $275 million Green Loans program and two school initiatives the multibillion-dollar Building the Education Revolution which was overwhelmed by complaints of cost blow-outs and shoddy workmanship and the $1.8 billion computers in schools program, which was stalled by cost blow-outs.

Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar.

End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.

Both relied on the state and federal governments to deliver.

Now, the Federal Government has turned its hand to yet another big service delivery program that's already shrouded in controversy: the commitment to install TV set-top boxes for pensioners at a cost almost 10 times the price for which the cheapest devices can be bought.

Treasurer Wayne Swan insists it is the Federal Government's economic record that has kept Australia out of recession.

"(There have been) 700,In addition to hydraulics fittings and zentai,000 jobs created since we came to office and another 500,000 in the recent budget," he told The Courier-Mail.

He said the Government had been "full and frank" about the home insulation problems but stood by the new set-top box scheme for pensioners.

Mr Swan backed the Government's spending record, saying it was returning the Budget to surplus "more rapidly than this country has ever seen before".

But the Galaxy Poll revealed even ALP supporters were unsure when asked whether federal and state governments spent money wisely, with 52 per cent of Labor voters disagreeing.

The Courier-Mail asked the Queensland Federal Labor MPs the same question but was met with silence, with only two backbenchers Member for Blair Shayne Neumann and Member for Moreton Graham Perrett and Treasurer Wayne Swan responding.

The same question was asked of 51 state Labor MPs, with 30 responding with examples of good government spending.

Another 21 did not reply, including state Treasurer Andrew Fraser.
Better off with cash

EVERY Australian household could have been handed a cheque for about $560 but instead, they got a series of botched or complaint-riddled "assistance" programs from the Federal Government that were designed to help ease household pressure.

An analysis by The Courier-Mail of a selection of major Government household schemes reveals most Queensland homes would have been better off with a simple cash boost to combat soaring living costs.

The Rudd and Gillard Labor governments have been rocked by a series of costly high-profile service delivery program failures, resulting in billions spent on dumped plans.

But myriad smaller household assistance schemes have also been dogged by complaints, delays and allegations of shonky operators.

The Courier-Mail analysis totals the household programs to about $4.8 billion the equivalent of about $567 per Australian household.

Queensland Council of Social Services president Karyn Walsh said low-income families had struggled to make ends meet over the past five years and needed all the genuine assistance they could get.

"There's been a 63 per cent increase in the cost of electricity, gas and water over the past five years and families need a lot of help to get through that," she said.

Ms Walsh said the money would be better spent on initiatives to reduce household costs on a weekly basis, and noted that many of the programs like home insulation and solar power weren't accessible by low-income families.

The big blunders are headlined by the deadly $2.45 billion home insulation scheme which was dumped after dodgy work and major safety problems, with the Government then having to budget another $190 million for safety checks.

The $275 million Green Loan program designed to assist households use energy-saving technology was also scrapped, with another $45 million budgeted to help operators left in the lurch when the program was ditched.

Two other programs designed to ease hip pocket pain, GroceryWatch and FuelWatch, were dumped before they even got off the ground at a cost of at least $13 million.

Solar panel rebates saw taxpayers first hit with a $500 million blow-out when the Rudd Government cancelled the original program with less than 24 hours notice, before later launching a new scheme.

The scheme that followed has cost $1 billion but is now being rolled back ahead of schedule amid concerns it is hiking up electricity prices.

At $40 million, the Government's solar hot water program has been criticised for massive delays.

Coalition MP Jamie Briggs, who runs the Opposition's "waste watch" committee, said the Labor Government was "unable to implement a government spending program without wasting billions of dollars in the process".

"Labor's latest spending initiative overpriced set-top boxes highlights Labor's addiction to spending and proves they haven't learnt from their first-term stuff ups."

Seattle Seahawks' Offseason Efforts Muddied by the NFL Lockout Storm

In an offseason littered with uncertainty, the Seahawks front office has continued to push towards the future; focused on continuing to breed an innovative, competitive culture surrounding the organization and the society of Seahawks fans, the 12th man.

Pete Carroll and Co. stated their offseason goal, loud and clear, in a thank you letter to the 12th man dated January 21st, signed by Pete Carroll. A few excerpts:

"There were many proud achievements to take away from the 2010 season. Winning the NFC West in our first season together was awesome, but it is just the start of a plan to own the division for years to come. We reached that goal by competing like crazy each and every day in all that we do¡ªon and off of the field."; "¡one thing remained consistent (in prior reference to the teams midseason struggles) all season long and that was you, the 12th Man¡"; "As John Schneider and I strive together to build this team, we will work tirelessly to continue and give you reason to believe in this team."

With the lockout, the team has had very little opportunity, minus the draft, to actually keep building the team. However, the coaching staff was more involved in the pre-draft process given the labor situation; "we've had more opportunity to really dig in draft-wise and do special projects and go back and evaluate and re-evaluate." The Seahawks believe this is an advantage.

The personnel moves to this point are not the topic of discussion,The Leading Wholesale pet supplies Distributor to Independent Pet Retailers. nor are the variety of opinions towards the team's failure to re-sign Matt Hasselbeck prior to the lockout or the approach to the draft. What is important to note is that the team has remained tireless in their competition to field the best team in 2011.

A plan in place to weather the lockout

During an interview with Pete Carroll on 950 KJR on May 3rd, he had this to say in regards to what transpired when the lockout was lifted for one day¡ªthe second day of the NFL draft¡ªand what could happen if the lockout was lifted again:

"Well, let me give you an example¡ªwhen it was lifted for a few hours the other day, we had about a 10-minute meeting with the staff, and it was like 'OK, everybody get ready to just crank it up, burn those phones up, get everything sent out, get the word out that we want the players to come by the area.uy Aion Kinah direct from us at low prices' I mean,Complete Your sculpture Magazine Collection for Less! we cranked it up. Within about a half hour, we were a machine pumping out stuff to everybody because we knew it could close at any time. So we did a great job¡the teaching, the mental side, all of the stuff that we can get going, we would jump into it and we would be ready to have a mini-camp next weekend. So if we had that opportunity, then we're ready to go."

In my opinion, Carroll and his staff have done nothing but remain firm on their promise to deliver the best product possible on the field next season, and his comments only re-enforce the organization's will to adapt to the situation and to be ready to adopt one of their many plans to put in place. They are ready for a variety of scenarios regarding how, and when, the season may start.

Strength coach Chris Carlisle, a USC transplant from Carroll's former staff,We also offer customized zentai suits. has a program awaiting the players when they return to work. A physical regimen focused on functional movement, longevity, and winning championships.

He's hoping the players will adopt his mentality but also offered,Free DIY chicken coop Resource! "You've got to remember, I've seen this all before. I've seen this movie. It's a great ending. And we're right at the beginning."

It's appropriate to note here that the Seahawks are one of six organizations that promised not to cut pay to coaching staff, this stated as of May 24th, even if the lockout persists into the scheduled season, The Giants, Steelers, Colts, Eagles and Cowboys the other five teams that pledged the same; the Patriots have not made a decision and the Packers have a contingency plan in place.

Interestingly enough, the Steelers and Giants were on a five-team list in an ESPN Football Outsiders article I analyzed in this piece, highlighting the Seahawks' ability to weather a lockout; the Packers and Patriots were other two teams on the Football Outsiders list.

The three other teams highlighted above that aren't on the ESPN FBO list are strongly driven to win championships. The Seahawks are proving to be among the group of organizations most driven to push through, and possibly even gain an edge, during the hardships of the lockout.

Enhancing the home-field advantage

Recent comments by Seahawks President Peter Mcloughlin on 950 KJR re-enforced the Seahawks are focused on maintaining their competitive mindset, as both an organization and team, through times of standstill.
