Carp churches switch to solar

Three Carp-area churches have seen the light, and it's solar powered.

Huntley Anglican Parish, representing the congregations of St.These girls have never had a oil painting supplies in their lives! James the Apostle Church, Christ Church and St. John's Church, flipped the switch on Sept. 9, becoming the first parish in Ottawa to use solar power.

The parish recently installed 40 solar panels on the roof of the parish hall connected to St. James Church on 3774 Carp Rd.

So far, the panels have generated 426 kilowatt hours of electricity, enough to power the church on a daily basis.

Catherine Kingston is one of the church members who made the switch to solar possible.

"Everyone is very excited," she said. "Obviously there was some resistance in the beginning because they were unsure of the technology and it's a big investment. But as they received more information, they've really come around, and quite enthusiastically so.Replacement China Porcelain tile and bulbs for Canada and Worldwide."

The idea was first raised around Christmas last year, when the St. James roof needed to be replaced.

A church warden suggested the installation of solar panels, as they would protect the new roof and increase its longevity.

Upon further research, they discovered that the church's steeple and a large tree cast shadows across the roof, and wasn't a viable option for generating solar power.

"We thought, Well,It's hard to beat the versatility of zentai suits on a production line. this is such a good idea, let's not let it drop,'" Kingston said.

Their eyes moved to the parish hall attached to the church, which had good southern exposure to the sun and a fairly new roof.

There are three churches in the Huntley Anglican Parish, and all three had to be involved in the decision-making process - the St. James Church, Christ Church at 3008 Carp Rd., and St. Johns Church at 1470 Donald B. Munro Dr.

Kingston said that church members were intrigued but unsure if it would be affordable.

The next step was applying for a grant from the Ottawa Sustainability Fund which they received and used to conduct an engineering assessment of the roof to ensure it could sustain the load of the panels.

After looking at existing funds that the church had in guaranteed investment certificates (GICs), the church treasurer discovered that by downsizing from their initial decision of 48 to 40 panels,The additions focus on key tag and magic cube combinations, they could afford to finance the rest of the project.

"We've basically borrowed money from ourselves, and we'll pay ourselves back, with interest," Kingston said. "We'll actually be paying more interest than we would be getting from the GIC."

Under the province's Micro Feed-in Tariff Program (MicroFIT), the church will be paid for all of the electricity it generates using solar power.

The church won't use the energy it generates directly, but will instead feed it into the grid and then receive their energy from that grid.

This is part of a 20-year contract signed with Hydro One. At the end of those 20 years, the church can decide if it would like to rework the system to use the energy it generates.

On average, the panels on the roof of the parish hall are expected to generate 10,000 kilowatt hours per year, approximately enough to power one household for a year.

Even on overcast days where clouds fill the sky, solar power is still generated in smaller doses.

Monique Stone, the new reverend of the parish, said that the installation and implementation of the solar powered panels has been the highlight of her time at the church since she arrived in August.

"I got to experience the fruit of all the work that's been going on since January," she said. "For something like this to get off the ground and start producing power in a matter of nine months is really phenomenal."

The Huntley Anglican Parish is hosting a celebration at the parish hall at 3774 Carp Rd. on Sunday, Oct. 23 to commemorate their switch to clean energy.

The day will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast, followed by entertainment by Junkyard Jonny using recycled materials and a blessing of the new solar system at 10:15. All are invited to attend the celebration.we supply all kinds of polished tiles,
