A New Concept for Rechargeable Batteries – USB

When my son was born, and his vibrating bouncy seat started eating through AA batteries like jelly beans, I bought rechargeable batteries. But I found them kind of a pain. They didn't always charge back up very well, and it took a long time to charge them. Therefore, the battery charger is now in a drawer, and while we still go through AAs like crazy for all those electronic toys, I just buy regular batteries. But if this concept design comes to light, I might just switch back. Continuance is a battery with a USB port right in the side.

As a bonus, and this might be the more popular feature, the batteries can provide a charge to USB-chargeable devices while on the go. Just plug your charger into the battery, then into the device, and get some extra power. The only drawback would be needing to charge them one by one, but I'm sure there is an easy solution to that. This is just a concept, but I'm encouraged to see them in actual packaging. Maybe it won't be too long before this concept is a reality.

The battery is an IF Concept Design entrant for 2011.

The 3DS is here: Nintendo takes handheld gaming to a new dimension

Announced last March, Nintendo's 3DS has been highly anticipated by gamers the world over. Any new Nintendo handheld is big news; the company has dominated the category since the release of the original Game Boy in 1989. While competitors from Sega to Sony have tried to make a dent in Nintendo's market share, all have failed. The 3DS, which is the successor to the most lucrative game system in history in the DS, is Nintendo's hope for staying on top of the handheld mountain.

The Hardware

Priced at $249.99, the 3DS costs $100 more than the DS when it launched in 2004. With such a hefty price tag, you'd expect a unit with a more premium look and feel than the ugly, cheap looking original DS hardware. For the most part, we are impressed with the unit. It's comparable to the build quality and size of the DS Lite, the much-improved second iteration of the original DS. The unit comes in two colors: Aqua Blue and Cosmo Black. The finish is high quality, similar to that of the DS Lite or the original PS3, and features a gradient effect, gradually shifting from a dark black or blue to a lighter tone on the back of the unit. Overall, it feels well made and durable, a hallmark of past Nintendo devices.

The unit has a physical power button along with the traditional d-pad, face buttons, and left and right shoulders. The select, start, and home buttons are placed under the bottom screen. It also adds an analog pad, similar to that of the PSP's. However, it feels much better; the concave pad has a rubberized finish, making it more comfortable than the PSP's analog nub. Volume, wireless, and 3D functions are assigned to sliders on the side of the unit. The cartridge slot is located in the same location as it was on the DS Lite. It accommodates both 3DS and DS cartridges.

The top screen, which is used for 3D display, is a wider aspect ratio than that of the DS, measuring at 3.53 inches wide by 1.81 inches high and featuring a resolution of 800 x 240 pixels. The lower touchscreen sports a much lower 320 x 240 resolution at the same dimensions as the DS's screen (though the resolution is slightly higher than the older system's 256 x 192 frame). As before, the touch functionality is accurate and responsive.

The unit also comes with a charging cradle, which lets you set it on your desktop to charge through a plastic wedge base. This also comes in handy if you want to play at a table or desk, allowing you to keep a steady viewing angle.

Like the DS, the unit has stereo speakers and a headphone jack. The audio quality is surprisingly clear; these tiny speakers perform admirably for their size. We wish the volume went a bit higher; you'll need headphones in a noisy environment. The microphone, which I used for both recording my voice and for commands in "Nintendogs," worked well, though the recordings had the tinny, thin sound I associate with early USB computer microphones.

The 3DS includes back- and forward-facing cameras. The back-facing array is actually two stereoscopic cameras, which allow you to take 3D pictures and save them to the included 2GB Toshiba SD memory card (which fits into a slot on the side of the unit). With a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels and no flash, the 2D images aren't on par with most cell phone cameras, let alone dedicated digital cameras. By comparison, the iPhone 4's highest resolution photos are 2048 x 1536.

Two proposed ordinances regarding snowplowing are under consideration

Stow -- While city officials agree snow that is plowed into the roadway can be a hazard especially when it melts and freezes again, City Council now has two choices regarding legislation to help correct the problem.
A proposed ordinance drawn up by Law Director Brian Reali would be handled by the city's zoning department instead of the police. It was introduced at Council's March 21 Roads and Safety Committee meeting.
"I don't think it's a police issue, and I don't think we need the police out chasing down snow complaints," said Reali, who drew up the ordinance at the request of Council.
A competing proposed ordinance submitted by the city's service department would be handled by the police.
The items remained in Council committee, and Council did not vote on either ordinance at its March 24 meeting.
City officials considered similar legislation last year, but it remained in committee and never reached Council for a vote.
Both current proposed ordinances prohibit snow being shoveled, plowed or blown into the streets.
For both, a warning would be issued first, then minor misdemeanor fines would be handed out.
A minor misdemeanor fine is a maximum of $150.
Reali said he wants to "avoid the problems of snow freezing to ice in the street."
Stow Service Director Dano Koehler agreed, saying, "If someone piles snow into the right of way, it causes a problem."
Koehler said when residents receive warnings about snow being blown into the street, they usually respond.
"This is a tool for folks who willfully want to dump snow into the right of way," Koehler said at the March 21 meeting. "Unfortunately, we lack a city code that directly addresses snow.
"There would have to be some visible evidence or an eyewitness to verify who is in violation of the code," Koehler said.
"Most of the time, it is obvious," he said. "If it is a contractor who has committed the violation, we would first question the resident who was receiving the service in order to get the information we need to issue a warning."

A New iPad Speaker Dock from JBL

Audio-component maker JBL announced this week its OnBeat iPad speaker dock. Costing $150, the OnBeat can increase the iPad's audio output while also charging the tablet. A USB port can connect the dock to a computer, so it can charge, amplify and sync an iPad at the same time.

If you are someplace where all your music is on your iPad and you want to fill a room with its sound, then a dock like this makes sense. But for home use, there are probably better and less expensive options. If you have a Wi-Fi network at home, you can connect your home stereo (and all of its speakers) to your iTunes library by buying an Airport Express from Apple for $99. You can then control the music from your computer, iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad using Apple's free Remote app.

And then there is AirPlay, a new wireless standard that will allow devices like the iPad to stream audio and video to displays and speakers. The current selection of AirPlay devices is limited (and expensive), but more devices are expected this year and will allow the iPad to share its audio content from afar.

our graphics test document was not without quality flaws

The attractive Lexmark Prevail Pro705 bundles a useful set of features for the office crowd, including wireless connectivity, an autodocument feeder and duplexer, speed text out, and an impressive five-year warranty.

The bad: We don't expect an office-friendly printer to output studio-quality snapshots, but our graphics test document was not without quality flaws.

The bottom line: The Prevail Pro705 is Lexmark's all-purpose office machine and we recommend it for home offices or small workgroups; just don't expect it to print out high-quality graphics or high-resolution photos.

Review: Unlike the consumer-oriented Platinum Pro905, the Lexmark Prevail Pro705 is designed for office use with a button-based control panel, an autodocument feeder (ADF), and other features to encourage smooth business work flow. At $200, the affordable and speedy Pro705 will be a helpful office assistant, but we hesitate to recommend it if you're printing a lot of photos.

The Prevail Pro705's gray-black color palette is typical for an office printer, but its smooth edges and rounded paper input tray shave off the sharp corners and make the device look more streamlined than the traditional rectangular

Earthquake affects Cornish business

Business leaders in Cornwall are closely watching how Japanese industry responds to the

earthquake.

The Japanese authorities are struggling to cope with the humanitarian aftermath of the

earthquake and tsunami.

Many businesses in Cornwall have forged close links with Japan, buying components for their

products direct from the country.

Company boss Blair Carroll from Redruth said quotes from one Japanese supplier had risen 20%.

Japan is the world's third largest economy with a huge manufacturing industry.

Mr Carroll, Managing Director of Boosters Limited, which supplies promotional products to

businesses in the county, said prices were rising rapidly.

"One of the main products is a USB supply. I came in on Monday morning and had a quote in for

a client, and by the afternoon the price had risen by 20%.

"Our suppliers have suspended publishing price lists on particular products like USB devices

and it's very much a price-on-application situation.

"Also they can't guarantee supply times because the infrastructure in Japan has effectively

broken down at the moment.

"Essentially our customers will be paying more. There's nothing we can do about it.

"I guess that unlike a lot of other manufacturing companies who tend to stockpile, Japan

tends to manufacture to order, so when something like this happens the effect is immediate."

JVC Readies 2 A/V-Nav Units

JVC Mobile Entertainment plans March shipments of its first two head units that control Clear Channel's iHeartradio app on USB-connected iPhones.

Both models, shown at International CES, are double-DIN A/V-navigation units with embedded HD Radio, iTunes tagging, 6.1-inch touchscreen display, hands-free and stereo Bluetooth, detachable faceplate and iPod/iPhone external mode. Both are also the company's first two head units with HD Radio Artist Experience feature, which displays images transmitted by select HD Radio stations. Images could include album art, artist-related images, promotional images, and station logos.

The two head units are the $1,199-suggested KW-NT50HDT and $999 KW-NT30HD.

From a connected iPhone, the iHeartradio app streams content from Clear Channel's 750 terrestrial radio stations, plus Internet-only channels, to an iPhone via cellular. From the navigation units and from the iPhone itself, users can view song and artist information, view high-resolution album artwork, and control channel up/down.

For the top-end A/V-nav unit, the app also delivers Clear Channel's Total Traffic and News (TTN) data service via cellular in areas where the HD Radio-delivered TTN service is unavailable. Via HD Radio, TTN delivers traffic data to the KW-NT50HDT 10 times faster than Clear Channels' RDS-based RDS-TMC service. TTN also adds the ability to deliver sports, news, and weather data.

The top-end nav unit also features dual HD tuners, letting users listen to an HD Radio station at the same time they're receiving traffic information via HD Radio.

The head units' iPod/iPhone external mode delivers the sound of any app, including Internet radio apps, to the car's sound system via USB cable. Unlike the iHeartradio app, however, those apps cannot be controlled from the head unit.

An optional cable lets iPod/iPhone users display stored video on the navigation units.

Navigation features include maps of all 50 states, Canada, and Puerto Rico, high-sensitivity WAAS-enabled GPS, more than 6 million points of interest, and quick startup in less than 15 seconds. Other useful features include magnified view, Lane Guide, Speed Limit Display and Speed Alert function.

Hard keys are also available on the frame for instant access to frequently used functions.

Adaptive volume adjusts volume levels according to car speed for navigation and music.
